A training tool that helps physicians involve patients in decision-making can reduce the use of antibiotics for acute respiratory infections, according to a study published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

Antibiotics are prescribed too often for acute respiratory infections, even though many are not bacterial infections and therefore will not respond to antibiotic use. Overuse of antibiotics is a health concern and may be contributing to antibiotic resistance.

Researchers conducted a cluster randomized trial to determine the impact of a shared decision-making training program called DECISION+2 on the use of antibiotics. Shared decision-making, in which a health care professional and patient make a decision together based on evidence and patient preferences, has been shown to be effective when benefits of treatment are not clearly evident for all patients.

The study was divided into two groups, one group of 181 patients who consulted 77 physicians in 5 family practice teaching units using DECISION+2 and a control group of 178 patients who consulted 72 physicians in 4 family practice teaching units. DECISION+2 included an online tutorial followed by an interactive workshop.

"After the intervention, patients in the DECISION+2 group were significantly less likely than patients in the control group to report a decision to use antibiotics immediately after consultation," writes Dr. France Lgar, Research Centre of Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Qubec and Department of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine, Universitaire Laval, Qubec, with coauthors. "The reduction in decisions to use antibiotics was observed in all intervention teaching units, while an increase was seen in 3 of 4 teaching units in the control group."

The results of this study are similar to those from an earlier pilot study that looked at the feasibility of this larger trial.

"These studies indicate that a combination of live and media education are generally effective in changing physician performance in the context of antibiotic use for acute respiratory infections," write the authors. "These findings are important given the debate and widespread skepticism about the effect of medical education on the performance of physicians in the practice setting."

U.S. Wildfires Map Reveals Rising Menace

A new map, done up in blazing color, plots more than a decade's worth of the massive fires that have hit the United States, offering a revealing portrait of an increasingly common menace.

On a stark black background, complete with topographic features, the map shows not only where fires have burned between 2001 and July 2012, but also shows their intensity, veering from a wash of purplish dots for the smallest fires, up through stipples of red and smears of searing yellow for the mightiest blazes.

The data, provided by two NASA satellites, were "about two mouse clicks away," said John Nelson, the map's maker, and the user experience and mapping manager for IDV Solutions, a Lansing, Mich., data-visualization company.

Nelson, whose recent world earthquake map proved a fascinating undertaking, said the devastating images of Colorado Springs's recent destructive wildfires got him wondering about the history and reach of dangerous blazes, and he easily tracked down some relevant information on U.S. government agency websites.

Numbers as pictures

For the purposes of his map, Nelson plotted only fires of at least 100 megawatts (MW), and those for which NASA expressed at least a 50 percent confidence rating. "I wanted to capture the more meaningful fire events," he said.

Since it's hard to visualize what a megawatt actually means? "I was asking myself, 'What the deuce is a megawatt?'" Nelson said ? he looked through Wikipedia for a device to express the measure in a more concrete way, and settled on the average summertime capacity of a nuclear power plant, or about 1,000 megawatts.

A search through 2010 numbers from the U.S. Energy Information Administration suggests that number ? about 1,000 megawatts ? is a fairly accurate representation of average plant capacity over the course of a year.

Although some of the burns captured on the map could be so-called prescribed burns ? controlled blazes that officials set to clear out flammable tinder from fire-prone areas ?all but the tiniest fires are almost undoubtedly wildfires, and a time-scale version of the map shows the number of fires growing over the decade, a reflection of an alarming trend that fire researchers know all too well.

Fiery uptick

"Fire activity has definitely increased in terms of overall activity and acreage burned, and that's not just in the United States," said William Sommers, a research professor at George Mason University's EastFIRE Laboratory, and a former longtime director of fire research for the U.S. Forest Service.

Sommers said that prescribed burns aren't likely to have increased very much in recent decades because of strict regulation at the state level ? pollution laws limit the number of burns allowed. In addition, he said, the preventative burns are not nearly as powerful as wildfires, and NASA instruments simply can't see them as well.

That means the overall increase is in wildfires, and that this can be attributed to three main factors: climate change, increasingly plentiful fuel for fires, and the increasing urbanization of wild places.

Sommers said that as people move into fire-prone regions, not only are there simply more people at risk and more houses to feed a monstrous fire if one should one ignite, but that it's also harder to conduct crucial fire prevention measures near a settled area. People don't want a prescribed burn in their backyard, he said, "but reducing fuel loadings would be the key to any kind of defense of a space."

The number of acres wildfires burn annually has doubled since 1960, according to a February 2012 report from the U.S. Forest Service, which points to climate change as a big factor in the increase. The report also says that fire seasons are likely to become longer and even more severe in the future.

"If you took housing out of the picture, just the fuels and the climate change would still, I believe, be causing a major increase in fire activity," Sommers said. However, he added, it?s the proximity to human populations that brings the emotional anguish and danger associated with fires, and pointed to the tragedies played out in block after block of incinerated homes in Colorado Springs this year.

"Most of your major, long-lasting fire events become news events when they affect people," he said.

Nelson said he's looking forward to hearing what people have to say about the map, which, he says, is simply a more aesthetically pleasing way of presenting data that are already out there.

"If something is appealing it will land in front of more eyeballs," he said. "And if you've got people looking at a pretty important topic, when maybe they wouldn't have been looking at it or thinking about it, then that's a good thing."

Businesspeople can sometimes get into legal trouble, or at least face ethical criticism, when an appearance of impropriety arises. For those involved in business development, this can arise from a number of situations.

Such a situation recently arose with respect to two members of the State System of Higher Education Board of Governors, who have recently come under fire after it became known that companies owned by them won nearly $14 million in business from various state universities over the past five years. The contracts rage from construction contracts, to landscaping projects to security contracts.

While the state system board doesn't actually solicit or vote on any of the contracts, it does manage the operations at all of the schools overseen by the board. According to one of the board members, his company went through the bidding process without him, so that he didn't actually oversee any of the contracts.

But that hasn't stopped the criticism of those who've wondered whether inside information helped the board members' companies put together requests for bids, which can be highly competitive. The concern is that those who are politically connected tend to get the desirable contracts.

Some have suggested that, although there may not have been any legal infractions, the behavior pushed ethical boundaries. The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges adopted a policy in January which requires officials and employees to avoid not only actual conflicts of interest, but also any activity or situation that presents the appearance of conflict.

Others, however, say that no rules were broken, that the contracts were awarded by individual schools and that the two board members had nothing to do with the process, and that the state Attorney General Office reviewed the final contracts.

Businesspeople involved in these types of situations do well to contact an attorney for legal and ethical guidance, particularly before any conflict arises.

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Jordan's powerful Muslim Brotherhood said Friday it will boycott the upcoming parliamentary elections in protest over recent changes in the kingdom's election legislation, saying they fall short of the opposition group's demands.

A boycott would deal a blow to King Abdullah II, who has made his reforms campaign the centerpiece of efforts to stave off Arab Spring-type of protests. Islamists have made gains all over the Middle East and show increasing strength in Jordan, where regular street protests over the past 18 months have called for wider public say in politics and for curtailing the king's absolute powers.

The elections, expected at the end of the year though no date has officially been set, are critical to the king's campaign. He has changed 42 articles, or one-third of Jordan's 60-year-old constitution, giving parliament a say in appointing Cabinets ? a task which used to be his sole prerogative.

"The government left us no choice but to boycott the elections because it did not show any seriousness toward real reforms," Brotherhood spokesman Jamil Abu-Bakr told The Associated Press.

Abu-Bakr, however, said the Brotherhood ? Jordan's largest opposition group ? may reverse the latest decision if the government promptly acts on its demands. "We will leave that discussion until a time when the government undertakes serious and real efforts toward reforms," he said.

The main dispute is over a new election law, which gave concessions to the opposition by allowing each eligible voter two ballots instead of one under legislation enacted in 2001. Parliament passed the new on Thursday. Under it, one ballot is reserved for representatives from local districts in this traditionally tribal society, while the other goes to a 27-seat national list of candidates.

That way, Islamists are expected to dominate the national list and also get some votes from the local list, while tribal pro-government candidates will likely muster most of the local support from their particular clan and relatives.

But the Brotherhood argues that the law still favors king's loyalists and that elections held under it would produce another docile legislature. It insists on an old, 1989 election law, which allowed Jordanians multiple ballots and saw the Brotherhood at the time win almost half of the seats in the first elections in more than two decades.

Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah said the Brotherhood has a right to its own opinion and is entitled to reject the new election law. "But we would like to see all groups contest the elections," he said. "Being part of the decision-making is the right path to building democratic institutions and ensure the continuation of reforms."

He suggested the Brotherhood work within the system to achieve its desired change, including "future amendments to legislation."

In 1990, six Brotherhood lawmakers joined a Cabinet for the first time ever. But the group's popularity waned soon afterward as its lawmakers and Cabinet members failed to deliver on promises to create jobs and improve living conditions of the poor. Instead, they focused on trivial issues, like banning alcohol aboard flights of Jordan's flag carrier to Arab countries and ending TV talk shows they considered too liberal.

The Islamists boycotted the last two elections but remained popular among poor Jordanians who benefit from Islamic charities that aid schools, banks and hospitals in areas outside the government's reach.

Abu-Bakr said the Brotherhood's 53-member Shura, or Consultative Council, decided on the boycott unanimously in a meeting late Thursday. The decision came almost two weeks after Abdullah appealed to the Brotherhood to contest the elections, as part of his efforts to engage with the Islamic Action Front, the group's political arm.

Despite opposing many of the king's policies, the Brotherhood has remained largely loyal to Abdullah's dynasty, which claims ancestry to Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist-dominated parliament convened Tuesday in defiance of a ruling by the country's highest court and swiftly voted to seek a legal opinion on the decision that invalidated the chamber over apparent election irregularities.

The lawmakers' session was brief ? it lasted just five minutes ? but it pushed Egypt deeper into a potential power struggle between new President Mohammed Morsi and the powerful military, which has vowed to uphold the judicial ruling that led to parliament being dissolved.

The crisis atmosphere has grown steadily since Morsi issued an order Sunday to reconvene the 508-seat legislature. His executive order said it was revoking the military's June 15 order to disband the chamber based on the previous ruling by the Supreme Constitutional Court.

The court said a third of the chamber's members were elected illegally by allowing candidates from political parties to contest seats set aside for independent candidates.

Parliament Speaker Saad El-Katatni told lawmakers that the legislature met to find ways to implement the court ruling rather than debate it out of respect for the principles of "the supremacy of the law and separation of authorities."

But he put forward a plan to seek what amounts to a "second opinion" from an appeals court on the ruling. It was not immediately clear, however, whether the appeals court would accept the legislature's request.

Both Morsi and el-Katatni are longtime members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the fundamentalist group that has long been at odds with successive Egyptian governments.

In its only public comment on the dispute, the military Monday delivered a thinly veiled warning to Morsi, saying the armed forces sides with the "constitution, legitimacy and law" ? language that means the powerful military will stand by and watch a ruling by the country's highest court ignored or breached.

The military handed over power to Morsi on June 30 after ruling Egypt for 16 months since the fall of Hosni Mubarak.

In the run-up to the handover, the military declared itself the country's legislative authority in the absence of a parliament and gave itself control over the drafting of a new constitution and the national budget. The generals also stripped Morsi of significant powers.

Alistair Overeem recently spoke about UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos, who he was supposed to face before testing positive for elevated testosterone levels, and more. Check out the highlights:

On Dos Santos: "Junior Dos Santos is the champion for a reason. I'm just going to lay low. I'm going to fight whoever they put in front of me. But I'm going to get my hands on him, and when I do, he's all mine."

On using his forced time off to rest up: "I have not had time off since 2004. That year, I had to cancel some fights with some injuries. Since 2005, I've had four, five, six, even seven fights per year. I never really had a couple months off. So for me now, this is wonderful. I can actually go out and have a social life. I'm continuing to train. I'm continuing to improve my game. But I feel good because I was always in fight preparation ? always, from one guy to the next. Now I'm having some time for myself. I'm using this time wisely. I'm settled into Miami. I really love it there. I'm finishing my house. And if you're in fight preparation all the time, you can't really do that. You're just training all the time, and you have to go to bed every night at 11 p.m., and you're not really meeting new people, so for me, this time off is great. I'm clearing my mind, and I can assure you I'm going to be back stronger in December."

On his recent meeting with Dana White going well: "Dana is an honest guy. He's also a direct guy. We're actually very alike. I'm also very direct. I think we'll get along. We're just taking our time. It was a good meeting. It was very calm. We voiced our opinions about what happened and just took it easy. It was positive. We were actually very much on the same page. He appreciated that I came in to speak to him directly, and I was satisfied after the meeting. It was very positive."

On who he'll face on his return: "For me, it doesn't matter. I have 69 fights under my belt. For me, it doesn't matter who I fight. I don't need to have a warm-up fight. I'm going to leave that up to the gentlemen of the UFC to decide. I'm sure they're going to come up with something interesting. Fine by me. If they want me to go for the title, I'm going to be ready for that. If they don't, I'm also going to be ready."

On Dos Santos: "He can talk all he wants. I know he's very happy that fight didn't happen, and I know he's afraid to fight me. He also knows that I'm the biggest threat out there to him. He knows when he fights me, there's no escape from it. He's going to hit and run, or he's going to go down. Either way, he's going to leave that octagon a loser."

? The fuck is this guy talking about? Dos Santos doesn't have to worry about fighting him, because he wont pass a drug test and will be cut by the UFC. There is the suggestion of a breeze, languidly floating over the ocean in the setting sun.

Pine Cyprus trees line the road into Stone Town from the airport. It is hot, really hot in this tropical late afternoon in Zanzibar and I gape at the scenery unfolding as we drive.

Children languidly make their way home from school and road side hawkers loudly sell their wears between chats with friends. I have waited for years to see the spice island whose name runs off the tongue like golden, vanilla treacle.

I arrive at the astonishingly beautiful Zanzibar Serena Inn hotel. Idyllically situated on the sea front of ancient Stone Town, and flanked by an exotic mix of sultan?s palaces, Portuguese forts, ancient dhow harbours and bright bazaars, the hotel is the epitome of style amongst the bustle of one of Africa?s most ancient and enchanting towns. It has been styled to represent the epitome of Swahili style, ethnic elegance and Arabic opulence, to quote their website. With high ceilings, shuttered windows and cool white walls, the rooms are constructed in the traditional Swahili manner, whereby the size is dictated by the length of the mangrove poles that make up their ceilings. Adorned with arched niches, antique plates and brass lamps and featuring traditionally carved furniture with basket weave and ceramic inlay, the rooms are predominantly royal blue and white. The air is moist and fragrant. There is the suggestion of a breeze, languidly floating over the ocean in the setting sun. I walk outside onto my balcony after a glorious shower and drink in the sultry night and the softly lapping waves just beneath me. Daniel, the charming and extremely knowledgeable GM of the hotel joins me on the roof for a dinner of crayfish thermidor. The humidity fills the hot night like the Zambezi floods the plains of southern Africa after the rains. The waiter (whom I?ve never met) greets me by name and puts a bangle of jasmine on my arm. It is these little details that make this hotel so very special. They actively encourage family stays here as well and offer a wide range of family-friendly room options; children?s dining; baby-sitting, and plenty of adventure, sports and educational entertainment for children of all ages.

I fall asleep in my palatial bedroom that night to the sound of the soft waves and the aroma of spice in the night air. The next morning after a scrumptious breakfast, a Stone Town tour awaits. The town reminds me of a James Bond set with its millions of narrow alleyways and bustling crowds. My guide tells me the fascinating and turbulent history of this island as we stride along. Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, in East Africa. It comprises the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25?50 kilometres (16?31 miles) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of numerous small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, informally referred to as Zanzibar), and Pemba. Zanzibar?s main industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. In particular, the islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. For this reason, the islands, together with Tanzania?s Mafia Island, are sometimes called the Spice Islands. Stone Town is the capital and a World Heritage Site. Former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate, and flourishing centre of the spice trade as well as the slave trade in the 19th century, it retained its importance as the main city of Zanzibar during the period of the British protectorate. When Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined each other to form the United Republic of Tanzania, Zanzibar kept a semi-autonomous status, with Stone Town as its local government seat.

Stone Town is a city of prominent historical and artistic importance in East Africa. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse influences underlying the Swahili culture, with a unique mixture of Moorish, Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements and the beautifully adorned, world-famous doors attest to this. The market, noises, smells, alleyways and chaos everywhere exhibit the inhabitants in all their colours, their clothes, their voices and their smiles. It is advised to get a guide otherwise you will be accosted to no end. We have to hurry back since, to my great chagrin, I have a flight to catch.
I try to change my Precision Air flight to stay longer but to no avail ? one day simply isn?t nearly enough to even begin to glimpse the wonders of the lovely Serena and to uncover the magic and mysteries of Stone Town. I console myself with the fact that I will be back soon.
And so it is. Jump forward two weeks or so and I am on an early 1Time flight, grateful to leave a freezing Johannesburg, on my way back to paradise. This time we head straight to the coast, our destination Mapenzie Sandies Beach Resort, an hour?s drive or so.
The resort is as relaxed and informal as the name implies. It is barefoot beauty, the design and decor reflecting the Moorish/Arab influences. And here?s the thing about Mapenzie ? it is all inclusive! Aren?t those just two of the most beautiful words in any language? Our room is rather perfunctory and smells a bit like disinfectant but the sea view is gorgeous and we are meters from the palm fringed white beach with its ever-changing colours of the coral reef, and the water the temperature of your bath. Meals are served in the main dining room and all are buffet. The nights are hot and humid and the mozzies travel through you like fire ants through a cow carcass, so best you spray. The following morning I go for a long walk on the beach. Activities here include daily entertainment with an animation team for kids and adults alike, water sports and scuba diving, two swimming pools and a beach area especially for children.
The resort has family rooms as well and this ALL inclusive holiday will cost you a lot less than a week in the Kruger at a 4 star establishment. The following morning we set of to Sandies?s adjacent, luxurious and elegant sister resort, Diamonds Dream of Zanzibar ? a gargantuan trek of about 100 meters down the beach.
Located on the East Coast of Zanzibar, Diamonds is a superb 5 star (also all inclusive) resort nestled in the midst of exotic gardens on the beach front at Pwani Machangani overlooking the turquoise Indian Ocean. It offers 104 deluxe gardens rooms, 40 ocean view junior suites, 10 additional junior suites with Jacuzzi and three beach villas with private pool. The five restaurants offer an exceptional variety of dining options and the three bars feature relaxing environments to enjoy refreshing drinks and cocktails.

As we emerge from our room into the sultry damp dusk much later after an afternoon snooze, the aroma of barbeque wafts up to greet us from the beach.
We have a refreshing caparinia by the pool to the strains of the four story high swaying palm trees and live jazz. Dinner is an all-African buffet affair on the beach and they really go all out.
We laze about the pool the next day like sedentary tourists but the resort has a million activities to offer families ? a water sports centre with catamaran, windsurfing and canoe; bicycles; a multi-sports court, tennis court and jogging trail; beach volley and beach soccer and daily recreation activities for kids as well as darts, billiards and table tennis. We sample the Italian fare that evening for dinner and I am served simply the best pizza I have ever had. Our last day brings with it frolicking on the beach, playing volleyball and just generally behaving like the big children we are. The evenings? entertainment offers an incredible display of Masai jumping which leaves me speechless and hypnotised.
And then, like a beautiful dream, our trip is over before it properly began. I look back from the air at the island that will always have with it a piece of my heart. Zanzibar, of thee I sing?.

PFT's Preseason Power Rankings: Colts are No. 31

The good news is, the Colts should be exciting.

The bad news remains, exciting isn?t nearly the same thing as good.

There?s a new attitude coursing through Colts camp, which there should be after last year?s 2-14 train wreck. When you?re replacing guys at every meaningful level of the organization, a sense of renewal and optimism is natural and necessary.

Whatever else he does, No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck at least gives the Colts evidence of a plan they lacked last year, when Peyton Manning?s neck problems led to the attendant problems of a Curtis Painter-led offense and the painful-but-inevitable departure of an icon.

Being able to stink for a single season and to be rewarded with one of the more polished passers to come out of college in years was a nice consolation prize for the Colts. If you?re going to replace a Manning, this is the way to do it.

But even Manning needed a 3-13 rookie season before he could deliver on his promise, and it?s unfair to count on anything else from Luck in 2012.

Strengths.

Even if it?s for the short-term, the Colts do have two very good pass-rushers in place after re-signing Robert Mathis to a four-year, $36 million contract and resisting the urge to purge veteran Dwight Freeney.

That?s a start, as changing over to a hybrid 3-4 system will be a major upheaval anyway. The ability to get after a quarterback is the first step toward any defense being respected or respectable, and that?s probably a lot of the reason Mathis and Freeney are two of the few old parts retained.

New coach Chuck Pagano brought a few guys he knows from Baltimore, in hopes that adding familiarity speeds the transition to a new program. Defensive end Cory Redding, defensive tackle Brandon McKinney and safety Tom Zbikowski will help install the system. There are a few other pieces in place to build with, as linebacker Pat Angerer and free safety Antoine Bethea give them acceptable starting-caliber players.

It?s not a bad start. It?s also necessary that a lot of these guys play over their heads, because they could be on the field more than they?ve had to in the past.

Weaknesses.

Gone are the days when the Colts could easily light up scoreboards.

Even if top pick Andrew Luck shows the kind of progress other rookie quarterbacks have in recent years, it?s still going to be difficult for him because of the lack of supporting cast.

They kept wide receivers Reggie Wayne and Austin Collie, and it?s a good thing they did, because many of the rest of the offensive jobs are a mystery.

Not only did they lose wide receiver Pierre Garcon, tight ends Dallas Clark and Jacob Tamme and running back Joseph Addai, but also steady offensive linemen Jeff Saturday and Ryan Diem.

They?re trying to fill in with as many kids as possible, and that will come with the predictable growing pains. After Luck, their next two draft picks were tight ends?Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen. Third-round speedster T.Y. Hilton is the closest thing to a threat at wide receiver out of this year?s draft, and it?s hard to expect much from him this year.

It?s a situation where you?d like to be able to lean on a running game, but neither Donald Brown nor Delone Carter inspire much confidence, and a patchwork offensive line doesn?t create much either.

Changes.

Where to begin?

All they really changed is changed is everything, getting rid of one of the best quarterbacks in league history, so they could start fresh with a fleet of new faces starting with Andrew Luck.

Throw in a new General Manager (Ryan Grigson), a new coach (Chuck Pagano), new coordinators (Bruce Arians on offense and Greg Manusky on defense), a new defensive scheme, and a load of new players, and it?s a full reset for a team that was one of the models of consistency for the previous generation.

Nine straight years of double-digit victories (including an amazing seven straight 12-win seasons) made the Colts under Manning and general manager Bill Polian a paragon of success, a role model for what they?re trying to do again.

But Polian was a known commodity when he took over the Colts, and there are precious few of those here in any capacity anymore.

Camp battles.

The cornerback position is kind of a mess, and they?re adopting an all-comers approach to the position.

Jerraud Powers is fine on the right side ? not great, but fine ? but who starts opposite him is very much up in the air.

Kevin Thomas, a former third-round pick, worked with the ones through the spring, but they tried to create as many options as possible. That included trading for Cassius Vaughn, claiming guys off waivers and combing through the street free agents. It?s a process that is far from over.

They?d love it if someone from the group of Delone Carter/Mewelde Moore/Vick Ballard/various others could push running back Donald Brown, but at the moment it?s his job to lose.

Prospects.

The Colts can crow about a new era all they want. But dumping all the veterans to clear the decks for the new guys will likely lead to another long season.

After going 2-14, it?s hard to imagine things getting worse, but the build could be slow. They open at Chicago, and the Bears have the kind of defense that will test the well-publicized maturity of Luck.

But then they host Minnesota and Jacksonville, a soft landing after a tough start. The schedule isn?t overbearing, with enough games against their fellow travelers at the bottom of the league that they could steal a few.

The reality is, this year?s priority will be for Luck to show he?s capable of the long job in front of him, and developing some of the many young parts around him.

If that means a few more wins, fine. But they?re a year or two worth of solid acquisitions away from even approaching their old form, and that?s if Luck meets every expectation. If they could match the kind of four-win jump Cam Newton helped achieve in Carolina last year, it would be reason for a party. But Luck doesn?t have nearly the kind of parts around him Newton did, which could make that kind of improvement more than anyone could fairly expect.

Taliban Claims Their Bomb Killed 6 US Troops
(AP) -- The Taliban are claiming responsibility for a roadside bombing that killed six NATO service members in eastern Afghanistan. They say the dead were all American troops.

Monday's statement from Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid says the soldiers died when their tank ran over the bomb around 8 p.m. Sunday in Wardak province, south of Kabul.

?NATO would not disclose the nationalities of the service members killed, but Afghan officials said they were American.

Wardak provincial police chief Gen. Abdul Qayum Baqizoi says that after the blast in Jalrez district, a coalition airstrike killed a local Taliban commander and wounded three? insurgents.

The Flying Tigers Soar Again - At A Remote Restaurant In China

An off-the-map city in southwestern China is the last place where you would expect to find a restaurant commemorating American fighter pilots from World War II.

Yet Kunming, in Yunnan province, hosts the Flying Tigers Restaurant, a tribute to American volunteer fliers. Though the Flying Tigers disbanded 70 years ago Wednesday, on July 4, 1942, they remain a legend among WWII buffs. The restaurant is even more of an oddity given China's tumultuous modern history; countless historical relics were destroyed or lost during the Maoist years, and even portions of the Great Wall were not spared. Yet the Flying Tigers Restaurant remains, a tribute to the days when the U.S. and China, so frequently viewed today as vying superpowers, were allies.

As Japan marauded through Asia in 1941, a former U.S. colonel working as a civilian flight instructor, Claire Lee Chennault, came up with a novel idea: a fighter group made up of ex-military American volunteers to be stationed in China. President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved the plan. The pilots' mission was simple: to be a thorn in the side of the Japanese, who had already occupied vast swaths of China and Southeast Asia. The United States was not at war with Japan, but that would come soon, in December of that year, after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Recruiters for Chennault went around U.S. bases wooing pilots, who resigned their commissions with the U.S. military and instead went to fight for China as mercenaries. The bonuses per each Japanese kill, offered by China, were only one incentive. Pilots signed up for various reasons, including better pay, an avenue out of unemployment and debt, the idea that fighting the Japanese was better than fighting the Germans and the lure of adventure and the wild blue yonder.

Whatever the pilots though they would find in China, war came to them anyway, making them legends not only in Kunming but throughout the world. As Beijing fell under Japanese attack, nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek and millions of refugees fled west to Kunming and Chongqing, in Sichuan province. On Dec. 20, 1941, just 13 days after Pearl Harbor, an alert system invented by Chennault reported 10 Japanese bombers crossing into Yunnan. The Flying Tigers took off in their Curtiss P-40 Tomahawks, sporting Chinese markings, to find and intercept the bombers.

By the end of the day, the mercenary pilots had taken out four Japanese bombers, damaged seven more and killed 14 Japanese airmen, as the story is told in Daniel Ford's chronicle, "Flying Tigers: Claire Chennault and His American Volunteers." Chennault told his pilots previously if the Japanese suffered 10 percent losses in an attack, they would go home and reconsider future raids -- 25 percent losses, and they'd quit assaulting Kunming altogether. And so it was. Though the Japanese had bombed Kunming for a year, the Flying Tigers proved an effective deterrent, driving away the enemy permanently. The Flying Tigers lost only a single aircraft, which had run out of gas on its way home.

The Flying Tigers carried out several other such legendary feats -- almost always vastly outnumbered -- before finally disbanding on July 4, 1942.

Yet the Tigers' legacy lives on, inside the restaurant and out. Today, the city safeguarded by the Flying Tigers is growing at a rate of 25,000 people a year, according to official statistics. Kunming's Flying Tigers Restaurant symbolizes that expansion. Wealthier residents are looking for new experiences, and entrepreneurs are willing to provide one.

Manager Xuzi Yi said the building, wartime home to Chennault and his Chinese wife Anna, opened as a restaurant in 2010. A plaque near the entrance calls the building "The Flying Tigers House." The building was used as a ticketing office for Chennault's commercial airline after the war, said Sun Guangsheng, president of the Yunnan Flying Tigers Research Institute. Sun was quick to note that despite what the restaurant's name and decor implies, the building never actually housed Flying Tiger pilots or their operations.

What the restaurant's re--creation of Kunming's war days lacks in accuracy, it makes up in presentation. Its long entrance is decorated with cases full of memorabilia, photos of Chennault, warplanes, and the Walt Disney-designed logo of the mercenary group: a cartoon tiger with small blue insect wings flying through a blue "V" for victory. The staff wears mock-military uniforms, greeting diners with a salute and "huanying guanglin," a common Chinese greeting to customers.

A scale-model of a Tomahawk hangs from an immense skylight in the four-story hall. The walls are mosaics of the Flying Tigers and Chennault. Behind the bar rise huge photos of aerial combat. Flatscreen TVs show old war movies while patrons dine on gourmet Chinese cuisine. War relics sit on display below glass cases -- with price tags, for the especially eager WWII enthusiast.

The Yunnan Flying Tigers Research Institute doubts that these artifacts are real. Sun said they were probably "made in Chinese shops." That's certainly conceivable in forgery-rich China, where the country's emerging capitalism has suspiciously made "real Ming Dynasty" vases and other allegedly historic kitsch available in tourist shops nationwide.

But trinkets and inaccuracies aside, the Flying Tigers undoubtedly made an impact in Yunnan, as marked by monuments above and graves below Chinese soil. It is difficult to speculate what Kunming would be like without the small band of pilots who had no idea what they were getting into. Sun didn't want to guess at present-day Kunming minus the Flying Tigers, but matter-of-factly said the pilots slowed the Japanese bombing of China and Burma.

What we do know is that without the heroics of the Flying Tigers, there wouldn't be a John Wayne movie of the same name - and neither would there be a strange, American-themed restaurant in a faraway corner of China.
