SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Glam Media, the women's lifestyle online publishing and advertising company, is close to selecting bankers to lead an initial stock offering slated for 2012, according to people familiar with the matter.
Investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are in the running to lead Glam Media's IPO, the people said, following a selection process that involved presentations from roughly a dozen firms.
While no final decision has been made on the exact timing of Glam's IPO, people close to the situation say the company is aiming to file a prospectus in the second quarter of 2012, with a potential offering slated for the third or fourth quarter of the year.
Glam Media declined to comment.
Glam's plans to float shares to the public come as several of its online peer companies have made similar moves.
On Tuesday, Jive Software made its Wall Street debut with shares jumping 25 percent on their first day of trading. Social game company Zynga is expected to price its IPO on Thursday.
Facebook, the world's No.1 Internet social networking company, is preparing for an IPO in 2012, a source familiar with the matter previously told Reuters.
Glam, which was launched in 2005, was the 10th most visited online property in the U.S. in October, according to comScore, with roughly 85 million unique visitors.
Glam was valued at $950 million when it acquired social networking service Ning for $150 million earlier this year, sources said.
The "bake-off" process in which banks pitch their services to handle Glam's IPO wrapped up a few weeks ago and Glam is currently deciding which firms will lead the offering. Bank of America, Citi and Credit Suisse are also in the running to have a role in the offering, according to the sources.

The Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight (Dec. 13), but interested skywatchers might have to battle chilly temperatures and bright moonlight.
The annual Geminids shower is usually one of the most spectacular light shows of the year, but this time around, the vivid and nearly full moon is threatening to take center stage instead.
On Dec. 10, lunar observers were treated to a stunning total lunar eclipse, and the moon's dazzling light in the night sky is expected to make it difficult to spot Geminids as the shower reaches its peak tonight.
"This year, folks will get a nice double whammy with the lunar eclipse on the 10th, and then the Geminid peak on the night of the 13th, but it would be nice if we could just turn off the moon after the eclipse," Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsvilla, Ala., told SPACE.com.
December's light show
The annual Geminid meteor shower has become known as one of the most impressive of the year, sometimes even eclipsing the more famous Perseid meteor shower that occurs every August.
"It's a relatively young meteor shower," Cooke said. "It didn't really turn on until the 1830s, and it may have been first seen from a Mississippi river boat back then. But they've been gradually increasing in strength over the years, and now they're the strongest meteor shower of the year." [Most Amazing Leonid?Meteor Shower?Photos]
The Geminids shower also features slow and bright meteors, with some of them appearing yellowish in color, said astronomer Joe Rao, SPACE.com's skywatching columnist. On a clear night, skywatchers have reported seeing up to 120 meteors per hour during the peak of the Geminids in previous years.
This year, however, skywatchers will likely see about half that rate, Cooke said.
"There will probably be around 40 or 50 per hour on the night of the 13th," he said. "Unlike the Perseids, it will be really cold, so folks need to remember to dress warm. The Geminids are noted for bright meteors, and there can be a lot of them. The shower is probably the best meteor shower to watch when the moon isn't getting in the way. So, if you can brave the cold, the Geminids will not disappoint, in general."
Lighting up the night sky
Occasionally, the Geminids can produce stunning fireballs, and if that happens this year, they should be bright enough to see even with the moonlight.
Meteors are often referred to as "shooting stars," but these streaks of light actually come from pieces of debris that hit Earth's atmosphere and burn up. Larger pieces that dive through the atmosphere can cause unusually bright meteors, which are called fireballs.
Most meteor showers are the remnants of comets, but the Geminids are a little different. The source of these meteors is a strange asteroid called 3200 Phaethon, which sheds bits of dusty debris.
This space rock orbits closer to the sun than any other known asteroid, coming well inside Mercury's orbit. This behavior makes 3200 Phaethon more like a comet than an asteroid, astronomers have said, but it the object has never exhibited any other features that would classify it as a comet, such as a coma, gas jets or a tail.
The Geminid meteor shower gets its name from the constellation Gemini, since the meteors appear to radiate from this point in the sky. When we look toward this spot, we are actually looking into the line of 3200 Phaethon's orbit, scientists have said.
While this year's Geminid meteor shower may be more subdued, next year's light shows are already showing more promise. The Quadrantids will be the next major meteor shower; skywatchers can expect these to peak on the night of Jan. 3, 2012.
The rest of the 2012 meteor shower lineup looks to be more impressive, with moonlight becoming less of a factor as the year progresses, Cooke said.
"Next year will be a better year for meteor showers, as far as moonlight is concerned," he said.

TRENTON, N.J. ? Drugmaker Merck & Co. is setting up a new research and development headquarters for Asia in Beijing.
The company said Tuesday that the center's first phase, set to be completed by 2014, will have capacity for about 600 employees spread over about 506,000 square feet of laboratory and office space. They'll be working on discovering potential new drugs, testing them in the lab and then people, getting regulatory approval and doing other research programs.
Merck says the new center is part of its $1.5 billion commitment to invest in such work in China over the next five years. The center will be in Wangjing Park, a rapidly expanding science and technology park in the Chinese capital.
"By strategically locating in China, we are able to complement our existing R&D capabilities, and facilitate new collaborations with scientists in the region and across emerging markets," Peter S. Kim, president of Merck Research Laboratories, said in a statement.
Like most other major drugmakers, Merck sees its revenue leveling off in Western countries, so it's aiming to boost sales in emerging markets, where governments and a growing middle class are spending more on health care. Those include the two most populous nations, China and India, as well as Russia, Brazil and Mexico.
Along with adding new sales offices in cities across China, Merck and its rivals are building new research centers there and in other parts of Asia, as well as factories that can produce medicines cheaply enough that local residents can afford them and the companies can still make a profit.
They are generally employing many local workers or setting up partnerships with local companies to help build familiarity with their brands, create goodwill with government officials and win government health program contracts.
Merck noted that two diseases that are part of its research and treatment focus, diabetes and heart disease, are becoming increasingly common in China.
The company has its commercial headquarters for China in Shanghai and has manufacturing plants at other locations across China.

CLEVELAND - As Ray Lewis watched from the sideline, Baltimore's other Ray ran roughshod over the Browns.
Ray Rice rushed for a career-high 204 yards, breaking loose on a game-changing 67-yarder in the third quarter, and the Ravens kept pace with Pittsburgh atop the AFC North by pounding Cleveland 24-10 on Sunday.
Rice and Ricky Williams had short touchdown runs and Lardarius Webb returned a punt 68 yards for a TD for the Ravens (9-3), who toyed with the Browns (4-8). Baltimore racked up 290 yards rushing, and were in such control that quarterback Joe Flacco took a knee three times to run out the final two minutes.
The Ravens turned to Rice on a blustery, misting day, when Flacco had trouble throwing and kicker Billy Cundiff missed a pair of field-goal attempts.
Cleveland lost for the fifth time in six games, and the banged-up Browns have just three days to prepare for the Steelers.
One play after Cleveland closed within 10-3, Rice broke the Browns' backs with his long run.
Taking the handoff from Flacco at his own 27, Rice swept left, found a seam and cut back to the middle of the field. He was able to pull away from a bunch of pursuing Browns near midfield before being pushed out of bounds at Cleveland's 5. From there, Williams carried twice, bowling in from the 1 to put the Ravens ahead 17-3.
For the third straight week, the Ravens were without Lewis, their motivational leader and star linebacker who has been slowed by a nagging toe injury. But the 5-foot-8, 212-pound Rice, who has become one of the NFL's best all-around backs, carried the load and made sure Baltimore didn't miss a beat.
The Ravens hadn't played since Thanksgiving and were out of sync at times. However, they were finally able to beat a weaker opponent following a quality win. Three times this season, they had stubbed their toe on the road following victories but despite two botched field goals, and a fumble that gave the Browns great field position, the Ravens pushed toward the playoffs.
The Browns have major problems.
Quarterback Colt McCoy finished just 17 of 35 for 192 yards and a TD. But he fell to 0-7 in his career against division opponents, and did little to convince Browns management that he should be their QB of the future. He's got four games left this season to make a favorable impression, assuming he's healthy enough to play.
McCoy injured his right knee early, came back after missing one play and took several hard shots in the second half.
After throwing a short pass in the first quarter, McCoy was hit by Ravens defensive end Arthur Jones as he backpedaled. At first, McCoy, whose white No. 12 jersey was smeared with grass stains and dirt, appeared to be seriously injured. He fell back to the turf, was treated by trainers and limped to the sideline. Backup Seneca Wallace came in for one play, but McCoy returned the next time Cleveland got the ball.
The Ravens thoroughly dominated the Browns in the first half, but led only 10-0 at the break after Cundiff missed field-goal attempts of 34 and 41 yards.
Baltimore had the ball for 18:49 and racked up 158 rushing yards on 28 carries in the opening 30 minutes. At halftime, the Ravens had 260 total yards to 93 for Cleveland. Amazingly, it was still a game at the break.
Following Cundiff's second miss to the right, Cleveland had a chance to run out the clock and escape to the locker room trailing just 7-0. But McCoy was intercepted by Jimmy Smith, who returned it to the Browns 15. The Ravens, who inexplicably stopped giving the ball to Rice in the final minutes of the first half, had to settle for Cundiff's 21-yard field goal with 13 seconds left.
Somehow, the Browns managed to hang around and cut it to 10-3 in the third on Phil Dawson's 21-yard field goal.
Flacco was stripped by Browns rookie defensive end Jabaal Sheard and Cleveland recovered. McCoy connected with a wide-open Peyton Hillis for 52 yards to the Baltimore 5. But the Browns couldn't score a TD as tight end Evan Moore let a pass from McCoy sail through his hands in the back of the end zone.
The missed opportunity was magnified moments later when Rice ran wild.
The Ravens rode Rice for their first score, taking a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on his 6-yard run. He darted through the line and found his way to the end zone, capping a 61-yard drive in which he carried seven times for 48.
