Gold edged higher on Wednesday due to strong Chinese demand and after Federal Reserve officials allayed investor concerns that the U.S. central bank will soon exit its bullion-friendly bond purchases.
Gold has been pressured in recent weeks by fears the Fed could scale back or halt its monthly $85 billion bond purchases that have buoyed bullion's appeal as a hedge against inflation.
The metal had fallen for eight sessions out of the last nine as of Tuesday and is down nearly 18 percent for the year.

Spot gold rose 0.2 percent to $1,377.7 an ounce by 0314 GMT, but remains not far off a two-year low of $1,321.35 reached during a sell-off last month.
Spot silver gained 0.5 percent to $22.49 an ounce, regaining more ground after dropping to 2-1/2-year lows earlier this week.
"Chinese buying is mainly pushing up gold prices," said a trader in Tokyo, adding that bullion could go up to $1,385.
Shanghai gold prices fell slightly on Wednesday but were still more than $30 higher than spot gold, indicating that demand in China - the world's No. 2 consumer after India - was strong because it would be cheaper for Chinese buyers to purchase gold from overseas.

U.S. gold was little changed at $1,376.4 an ounce.
Bernanke Eyed
Investors are eyeing Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's testimony in Congress about the state of the U.S. economy later in the day for clues to his stance on ending the monetary stimulus this year. The Federal Open Market Committee also releases the minutes of its April 30-May 1 meeting on Wednesday.

New York Fed President William Dudley and St. Louis Fed chief James Bullard, who will both vote at the central bank's next scheduled meeting on June 18-19, made clear further economic progress was needed before they would support curtailing bond purchases.
Some officials are calling for an early end to the monetary easing given recent gains in the U.S. jobs sector.
(Read More: Bernanke Expected to Deliver Dovish Message)
"We would suggest that Bernanke will hint at some sort of pullback, in which case, we could see a pickup in volatility and lower gold prices heading into the balance of the week," said Edward Meir, a metals analyst at brokerage INTL FCStone.
Persistent outflows from exchange-traded funds as well as technical charts suggest gold may have more downside pressure. Holdings of the largest gold-backed exchange-traded-fund, New York's SPDR Gold Trust, fell 0.8 percent on Tuesday to 1,023.08 tons, the lowest in more than four years.

LONDON (CNN) ? A man thought to be a serving British soldier was killed by two armed men in a frenzied attack on a London street Wednesday, in what the government is treating as a suspected act of terrorism.
Witnesses told of a gruesome scene in which the man was hit by a car, then hacked with cleavers and his body dumped in the middle of the road in Woolwich, southeast London.
The two suspects in the killing were injured in a confrontation with police and have been taken to two hospitals, where they are being treated.
CNN affiliate ITN aired a video showing a man with bloody hands and holding a meat cleaver, who says, ?We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you.?
The man, who seems to have a London accent, carries on: ?The only reasons we killed this man this is because Muslims are dying daily. This British soldier is an eye for an eye a tooth for tooth.
?We apologize that women had to see this today but in our lands our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government. They don?t care about you.?
Those statements spurred the Muslim Council of Britain to issue a strong statement to condemn the attack as ?a truly barbaric act that has no basis in Islam,? as well as to urge Muslim and non-Muslims alike ?to come together in solidarity to ensure the forces of hatred do not prevail.?
In another video ? obtained by the British tabloid newspaper The Sun and apparently shot in the same place around the same time ? the meat-cleaver-wielding suspect apologized to women who?d witnessed the attack, before quickly adding ?but in our lands our women have to see the same.?
?You people will never be safe,? the man said. ?Remove your government. They don?t care about you. You think (Prime Minister) David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start busting our guns? ? Get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so we can all live in peace.?
The victim is believed to be a serving soldier who was based at a nearby barracks, Nick Raynsford, a member of Parliament, told CNN.
The soldier had apparently been on duty in central London and was returning to the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich when he was attacked, Raynsford said.
Speaking in Paris, Prime Minister David Cameron said there were ?strong indications? that the man?s killing was a terrorist incident.
He said he would be returning early from the official trip to handle the situation and will be back in London Wednesday night.
?It is the most appalling crime,? he said alongside French President Francois Hollande, vowing that the United Kingdom will not buckle? in the face of threats to its security.
A short time later, after leading a meeting of the country?s civil emergency committee known as COBRA, UK Home Secretary Theresa May offered a similar assessment of the situation and a similar message of resolve.
?We have seen terrorism on the streets of Britain before, and we have always stood against it,? she said. ?Despicable acts like this will not go unpunished.?
Cameron declined to confirm whether the man killed was a serving soldier, while Britain?s defense ministry said it was investigating to see whether that?s the case.
As they did, authorities increased security around Woolwich and all military barracks in London, a British government source said.
British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said the killing was a ?very shocking incident? and that the UK takes the safety of its troops ?very seriously,? as he headed into the COBRA meeting.
London Mayor Boris Johnson tweeted: ?This afternoon?s attack in Woolwich is a sickening deluded and unforgivable act of violence. My thoughts are with the victim and his family.?
That sentiment was echoed by many others ? such as May, the home secretary, who described it as ?a sickening and barbaric attack?; a ?concerned? Queen Elizabeth II; and Labour Party leader Ed Miliband, who predicted the ?whole country will be horrified? by what he called the ?appalling events.?
Commander Simon Letchworth told reporters in Woolwich that local officers had responded when an assault was reported at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday and a firearms unit was called to the scene. British police do not usually carry firearms.
?Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police,? he said. ?They have both been taken to separate London hospitals and are receiving treatment for their injuries.?
?They were hacking at this poor guy?
Eyewitnesses have given gruesome details of the killing.
Michael Atlee told CNN he and friends heard gunshots and when they turned the corner saw a pool of blood on the sidewalk and a trail of blood leading into the road.
?It just looked like a mess,? Atlee said. ?It just looked like a bloody mess.?
The man killed appeared to be wearing a T-shirt for Help for Heroes, a charity that helps military veterans, he said.
Another witness, who gave his name only as James, told London?s LBC 97.3 radio station that he saw two men standing by the victim.
At first he thought they were trying to help the man but then saw two meat cleavers, like a butcher would have.
?They were hacking at this poor guy, literally,? he told the radio station, as if they were trying to remove his organs.
?These two guys were crazed. They were just not there. They were just animals.?
The men appeared to want to be filmed, he said, saying that one of the attackers went over to a bus and asked people to take photos of him as if he wanted to be on TV.
He said the two men rushed at police when they arrived, at which point shots were fired and both men went down.
Lauren Collins told CNN: ?I still am quite shaken at what I?ve seen ? I?ve seen a victim of an awful attack, and I?ve seen a body of a young man.?
Another witness, Woolwich Theatre owner Adrian Green, said the incident was ?shocking? but did not reflect the true nature of the area.
Raynsford said the military based at the centuries-old barracks had a close relationship with the local community. Woolwich is a mixed, multicultural area, he added.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Tuesday dismissed a mushrooming expenses scandal as a distraction, but also said he was "very upset" that members of his Conservative Party had apparently tapped the public purse for personal gain.
Harper, facing the biggest crisis since he won power in early 2006 with promises to clean up government, urged legislators to focus on the economy, which the Conservatives see as their strongest suit.
"We have an active and important agenda on the issues that matter to hard-working Canadian families ... when distractions arise, as they inevitably will, we will deal with them firmly," Harper told his Conservative caucus.
"But we cannot lose sight of our top priority."
In a widening spending scandal that is being investigated by ethics commissioners, three Conservative senators have stepped down to sit as independents after audits indicated they claimed expenses to which they were not entitled.
Harper's chief of staff, Nigel Wright, resigned on Sunday after secretly writing a personal check for C$90,000 ($88,000) to enable one of the three, Senator Mike Duffy, to repay housing allowances that he should not have claimed.
Critics say the large check broke ethics rules that prevent senators from taking gifts. Conservative legislators and their supporters fear that the scandal in the Senate, the upper house of Parliament to which members are appointed by the government, will damage the party's reputation.
The New Democrats, the official opposition, say the Conservatives have violated the trust of voters.
"These aren't distractions. This is about the abuse of public trust," NDP ethics critic Charlie Angus said. "The prime minister's ethical brand is deeply damaged at this point."
Speaking to the caucus before leaving for a visit to Latin America, Harper made no mention of Duffy, Wright or the C$90,000 check. But he tried to ease some of the concerns of his fellow legislators by criticizing those he suggested were to blame.
"I'm not happy. I'm very upset with the conduct of some parliamentarians and our officials in my office," he said.
"Anyone who wants to use public office for their own benefit should make other plans or better yet, leave this room."
Duffy quit the Conservative caucus last Thursday. A fellow Conservative senator Pamela Wallin, whose expenses are also being probed, followed suit on Friday. A third senator, also embroiled in the expenses scandal, quit in February after he was charged with assault.
"This is an unfortunate, unacceptable situation ... (Harper) has expressed leadership and that's exactly what I wanted to hear from him," Treasury Board Secretary Tony Clement told reporters after the prime minister spoke.
Polls taken before the scandal broke last Tuesday showed the Conservatives trailing the opposition Liberals, who are led by Justin Trudeau, the photogenic son of former Liberal Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
The next election is not due until October 2015.

LONDON (Reuters) - Vodafone posted its largest ever quarterly fall in key organic service revenue on Tuesday, prompting it to keep hold of a 2.1 billion pound dividend from its U.S. arm rather than return it to shareholders.
The world's second largest mobile operator, at the center of intense speculation as to whether it will sell its U.S. arm in one of the world's largest deals, posted a 4.2 percent fall in organic service revenue, broadly in line with forecasts.
It is the largest quarterly drop since the company started using the measurement in 2003.
It also marked a further acceleration from the 2.6 percent fall in the third quarter and reflected the tough economic conditions in its core European markets and the regulatory cuts which hit a peak in the three months to the end of March.
The steepest falls in revenue were in Southern Europe, where operators are cutting prices to win business from struggling consumers. In Italy service revenue fell 12.8 percent, while in Spain it was down 11.5 percent.
The group also took a 1.8 billion pounds impairment charge on its businesses in Spain and Italy, taking the total writedowns on those two countries for the year to 7.7 billion pounds.
"We have faced headwinds from a combination of continued tough economic conditions, particularly in Southern Europe, and an adverse European regulatory environment," Chief Executive Vittorio Colao said.
"The board remains focused on balancing ongoing shareholder remuneration with the long-term investment needs of the business, and going forward aims at least to maintain the ordinary dividend per share at current levels."
Overall the group posted its first fall in full-year sales since 2005, down 4.2 percent to 44.4 billion pounds ($67.6 billion), while core earnings fell 3.1 percent to 13.3 billion pounds.
Its adjusted operating profit however was above guidance, up 9.3 percent to 12 billion pounds due to the strong performance in the United States, where it owns 45 percent of Verizon Wireless.
The group did not make any mention of the speculation that it could sell its stake to joint venture partner Verizon Communications.

May 20, 2013 ? Most of the animal proteins found in the meat industry waste have, until now, been underutilised. The challenge is to transform such waste into food of higher functionality and added value. Thanks to the findings of the EU funded PROSPARE project, it is possible to reuse the protein and lipid fraction of disused food, according to project co-ordinator Arnaldo Dossena, who is the head of the food science department at theUniversity of Parma, in Italy.
Up to 50% of the animal weight processed in the meat industry is discarded as left-overs and ends up composted or incinerated, despite beingrich in proteins and lipids. Turning the lipid fraction of such waste into biodiesel has proven too expensive. So the focus is now on reusing proteins. Today, only 22% is converted by the food industry into feed and barely 3% is consumed as food. The problem is that recovery methods are energy intensive. They also convert the source proteins into meals with poorer digestibility and nutrient properties as well as a low commercial value.
Thanks to a process involving enzymes to digest food, poultry left-overs such as bone and meat trimmings can be converted into proteins dubbed functional animal proteins hydrolyzates. They differ from existing protein hydrolyzates, from eggs, buttermilk, or fish already on the market in that they have a higher content of nutritionally useful amino acids. They can be used as supplements for sports diet, to help build up muscle tissue, and as additives in processed food, for example. So far, some of their properties -- namely prebiotic, antimicrobiotic, antioxidant and hypotensive -- have been demonstrated in vitro.
The technology developed under the project is now being tested by a Belgian food company, called PROLIVER. It is hoping to enhance the nutritional quality of its protein hydrolysates, already sold in dietary, health and sports food supplements. One of the project partners, Mobitek-M, which is a Russian company specialised in production of protein-enriched food stuffs, is also planning on including these products into ice-cream, under the follow-up Rosano Project. They have built a plant in the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation, which is about to start of transforming functional animal protein at a capacity of one hundred tonnes per day.
Some see a real advantage in this approach. "I think in Europe the most important part of such an approach is to reduce the impact of the [food] production on the environment," explains Vegard Segtnan, senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fishery and Aquaculture Nofima, located in Troms?. He also believes that there is also a market for these specialised protein products that are easily assimilated by the body for sick people, the elderly and athletes. "The materials have a one up to two years shelf life," Dossena says, "[they] can be used to increase the protein count where there is a protein deficit since they contain many free amino acids [which are therefore easily absorbed]."
These products aim to complete the gamut of protein-based products present on the market. However, there is currently no EU-wide specific regulations for them. Instead, they are approved on a case-by-case basis in individual EU countries. Protein hydrolyzates approved in national EU markets need to qualify as a specific food product category, according to Karin Verzijden, a food regulatory expert at law firm Axon lawyers, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. For example, these products might qualify as dietary supplements. "It really depends on the emphasis that is put on their ability to be digested much quicker than regular proteins for instance," Verzijden said.
In addition to qualifying as food dietary supplement, experts disagree as to whether they might either qualify as novel foods used as food ingredients, or as additives. It partly depends on whether they were not already used for human consumption within the EU market prior to 1997, when the EU novel food regulation entered into force. Until further clarity regarding the food category these applications would be considered under by the food regulator at EU-wide level, it may be a while before they reach their potential users.

Since Google's introduction of the new Hangouts chat service, members of the team responsible for deploying it have been working to reassure people that it will eventually include Google Voice as a component. And for good reason, as there was no mention of Google Voice at Google I/O even as the ability to make outbound Google Voice calls via the desktop Chrome extension was unceremoniously removed in the update to Hangouts from Google Talk. Product manager for real time communications at Google, Nikhyl Singhal, reassured everyone today that outbound calling for Google Voice is still available via Gmail, and took a moment to reveal more information about the future of the service. In a Google+ post, Singhal went on to explain that not only will Google Voice be seamlessly integrated into Hangouts, but that "Hangouts is designed to be the future of Google Voice". The team also intends to bring back full inbound and outbound calling functionality from the Chrome extension going forward.
While it's not completely understood why it had to remove the ability to make outbound calls on the desktop all together in this process, it's great to hear directly from Google about possible new features. Building on initial thoughts of what Google had up its sleeve for a unified chat service that would fully integrate calling and SMS, these bold statements have us cautiously optimistic about upcoming releases of Hangouts.

Eesha Khare, 18, of Saratoga, Calif., received the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award of $50,000 for the invention of a tiny energy-storage device.
Waiting hours for a cellphone to charge may become a thing of the past, thanks to an 18-year-old high-school student's invention. She won a $50,000 prize Friday at an international science fair for creating an energy storage device that can be fully juiced in 20 to 30 seconds.
The fast-charging device is a so-called supercapacitor, a gizmo that can pack a lot of energy into a tiny space, charges quickly and holds its charge for a long time.
What's more, it can last for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles, compared with 1,000 cycles for conventional rechargeable batteries, according to Eesha Khare of Saratoga, Calif.
"My cellphone battery always dies," she told NBC News when asked what inspired her to work on the energy-storage technology. Supercapacitors also allowed her to focus on her interest in nanochemistry ? "really working at the nanoscale to make significant advances in many different fields."
To date, she has used the supercapacitor to power a light-emitting diode, or LED. The invention's future is even brighter. She sees it fitting inside cellphones and the other portable electronic devices that are proliferating in today's world, freeing people and their gadgets for a longer time from reliance on electrical outlets.
"It is also flexible, so it can be used in rollup displays and clothing and fabric," Khare added. "It has a lot of different applications and advantages over batteries in that sense."
Khare's invention won her the Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, conducted this week in Phoenix, Ariz. For more information about the event and other prize winners, check out our earlier coverage.

We?ve been handdrawing a Harry Potter Card game:
Wanna see Harry, Ron and Hermione?
This is my Ronnie, with her two best friends. They?ve been playing Harry, Ron and Hermione (amongst other things - I think they?ve also been Sam, Frodo and Pippin), and it really fits the beautiful relationship they?ve devoloped, now that their time in primary school is coming to a close. Ah, I love my two sons in law ;)
We had Couchsurfers over again:?
An Italian mom with her son, who was a perfect match for my twins.Oh, it was so bright and shiny having them here - it?s a good thing they?ll come back next week, on their way back home. Mehmet, Miro and her Nico communicated so well, and while the kids played, we cooked like an italian family - I made pasta and she made Polenta and I made cupcakes and she made almond cookies and I made salad and she made cheese with mustardo, the most delicious thing I?ve ever eaten, and it was loud and crowded around our table and she told stories about the community-living experiences she has and her night in a russian prison.?
That?s why I love Couchsurfing.
I got a job today!Shortly after I received those news - I sat in class, teaching calculating with Euros - Hermione Ronnie came in, because she?d had an accident in sports:
And you know what Neil Gaiman says:
Make Art.
So she did:
While we?re talking about poetic and creative conversion from pain into art - let me just show you my video of the day:
Biffy Clyro -- Opposite - MyVideo
Ahhhhhh!
I love love love their videos, always. Even when Simon Neil doesn?t go shirtless. I love how they are totally over-the-top dramatic. How they show this literal walking-away-from-a-carcrash-relationship. And how they include the warped tree from the album cover. And all the glittering shards. I loved this song even before the album release, when I could only find bad quality acoustic versions on youtube, but now, with this video, I love it even more.
Eva?s on her scouts camp, and right when she returns, she can pack her bags again, because she?s leaving for France, where she?ll be staying for two weeks. Tim got his vaccs, because he?s going to Asia next month, for four long weeks. And Ronnie will go on a class trip, too, so it?ll be just me and the boys. Which is lovely, too. And I?m missing my best friend. That, as well. I wish she was here so I could just debate the latest Game of Thrones episode with her. Sir Jaime?s a hero, see?
And now... well, it?s late, and i have to cycle to Holland tomorrow. I?ll smoke one last cigarette, and I might check into this book of mine, and then it?s... Good Night :)

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)
WASHINGTON (AP) ? The ousted head of the Internal Revenue Service apologized to Congress on Friday for his agency's tougher treatment of tea party and other conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. He said they resulted from a misguided effort to handle a flood of applications, not political bias.
"I want to apologize on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service for the mistakes that we made and the poor service we provided," Steven Miller, who has been acting IRS commissioner, told the House Ways and Means Committee as the panel held Congress' first hearing on the episode. "The affected organizations and the American public deserve better. Partisanship and even the perception of partisanship have no place at the Internal Revenue Service."
At a hearing that saw lawmakers from both parties harshly criticize his agency, Miller conceded that "foolish mistakes were made" by IRS officials trying to handle a flood of groups seeking tax-exempt status. He said the process that resulted in conservatives being targeted, "while intolerable, was a mistake and not an act of partisanship."
Though Miller and another top IRS official are stepping down, the chairman of the committee said that would not be enough.
"The reality is this is not a personnel problem. This is a problem of the IRS being too large, too powerful, too intrusive and too abusive of honest, hardworking taxpayers," said Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich.
At one point, anti-IRS sentiment was voiced by spectators, who included members of grass-roots conservative groups. They broke into cheers after Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., said, "This is absolutely an overreach, and this is an outrage for all Americans."
Camp also said the tougher examinations that conservative groups encountered seemed to be part of a "culture of cover-ups and intimidation in this administration." He offered no other examples.
Camp's remark about cover-ups drew a sharp retort from the committee's top Democrat, Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan. Levin said if the hearing became a preview of the 2014 political campaigns, "we'll be making a very, very serious mistake."
The administration has been forced on the defensive about last September's terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, and the government's seizure of The Associated Press' telephone records as part of a leaks investigation.
Republicans are hoping to link the issues in an effort to raise questions about President Barack Obama's credibility and make it harder for him to press a second-term agenda.
Friday's hearing is the first of what are expected to be many on the subject by congressional panels. Underscoring the seriousness of the episode, Miller was sworn in as a witness, an unusual step for the Ways and Means panel and one that could put Miller in jeopardy if he is later shown to have misled lawmakers with his testimony.
When the hearing ended after nearly four hours, Camp said, "I promise the American people, this investigation has just begun."
Levin said that the IRS's mistreatment of conservative groups meant the agency "completely failed the American people." He said Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that makes decisions about tax-exempt groups, should be "relieved of her duties."
Miller said the IRS struggled to efficiently handle growing numbers of applications for tax-exempt status.
The agency has said between 2008 and 2012, the number of groups applying for tax-exempt status as so-called social welfare groups more than doubled. Along with that was an increase in complaints that such groups were largely engaging in electoral politics, which is not supposed to be their primary activity.
"I do not believe partisanship motivated the people" at the IRS who engaged in the harsher screening for conservative groups, Miller said.
In recent months, Republicans on the Ways and Means panel had repeatedly asked the IRS about complaints from conservative groups that their applications were being treated unfairly.
On Friday, numerous Republicans wanted to know why Miller and others never told them the groups were being targeted, even after May 2012, when the IRS has said Miller was briefed on the practice. Miller was previously a deputy commissioner whose portfolio included the unit that made decisions about tax-exempt status.
"I did not mislead Congress or the American people," Miller told Rep. Charles Boustany Jr., R-La., one of several Republicans who challenged him about why he hadn't mentioned the targeting in the past.
Also testifying Friday was J. Russell George, the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration.
In a report he issued this week, George said IRS officials reported they were not politically pressured to target conservative groups. Asked about that conclusion, George said Friday, "We have no evidence at this time to contradict that assertion," but in prepared testimony to the committee he said he is continuing to investigate that question.
George's report concluded that the IRS office in Cincinnati, which screened applications for the tax exemptions, improperly singled out tea party and other conservative groups for tougher treatment. The report says the practice began in March 2010 and lasted more than 18 months.
The report blamed "ineffective management" for letting IRS officials craft "inappropriate criteria" to review applications from tea party and other conservative groups, based on their names or political views. It found that the IRS took no action on many of the conservative groups' applications for tax-exempt status for long periods of time, hindering their fundraising for the 2010 and 2012 elections.
Republicans have spent the past few days trying to link the IRS' improper scrutiny of conservatives to Obama. The president has said he didn't know about the targeting until last Friday, when Lerner acknowledged at a legal conference that conservative groups had been singled out.
Many of the groups were applying for tax-exempt status as social welfare organizations, which are allowed to participate in campaign activity if that is not their primary activity. The IRS judges whether that imprecise standard is met.
Attorney General Eric Holder has said the FBI was investigating whether the IRS may have violated applicants' civil rights.
Obama has rejected the idea of naming a special prosecutor to investigate the episode, saying the investigations by Congress and the Justice Department were sufficient.
Obama has named Daniel Werfel, a top White House budget officer, to replace Miller.
Also Thursday, Joseph Grant, one of Miller's top deputies, announced plans to retire June 3, according to an internal IRS memo. Grant is commissioner of the agency's tax exempt and government entities division, which includes the agents that targeted tea party groups for additional scrutiny.
Grant joined the IRS in 2005 and took over as acting commissioner of the tax exempt and government entities division in December 2010. He was just named the permanent commissioner May 8.
When asked whether Grant was pressured to leave, IRS spokeswoman Michelle Eldridge said Grant had more than 31 years of federal service and it was his personal decision to leave.

Considering it's not one of the company's key operations, it's safe to say AT&T's been successful in its efforts to build out U-verse. Now, in an effort to make life on the couch a little less complicated for subscribers, the Rethink Possible network is introducing an all-new On Demand storefront. With a focus on making content easier to discover, AT&T says the UI will make for an intuitive way to navigate the menus. Additionally, you'll find some novel search tools that should make it easier to find movies and TV shows. U-verse customers will now also see a "My" section, allowing them to quickly access rentals, queued up flicks and promos that AT&T may be offering. The newfangled U-Verse On Demand will be available in more than 45 markets starting today, with more being expected to join "on an ongoing basis throughout the year."

The rate of new home construction fell 16.5 percent in the month of April, following a 7 percent increase in March, while the number of permits issued rose 14.3 percent, after declining by 3.9 percent in March, according to real estate market trends reported by the Commerce Department today.
New home construction took place at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 853,000 in April, down considerably from the annual rate of more than 1.02 million for March, but 13.1 percent higher than the annual rate of 754,000 in April 2012, the Commerce Department reported.
The slump in new construction helped drag down stocks in morning trading, according to Bloomberg News, as the markets reacted to disappointing housing, employment and manufacturing data.
Building permits ? a forward-looking indicator of real estate market trends ? were issued at an annual rate of more than 1.01 million, an increase of 14.3 percent from the annual rate of 890,000 for March and 35.8 percent higher than the annual rate of 374,000 in April 2012.
Confidence among home builders rose in May, reversing months of declining confidence, according to real estate market trends reported yesterday by the National Association of Home Builders, a trade association based in Washington, D.C. The association?s Housing Market Index rose three points to a reading of 44 on improved perceptions of sales conditions, sales expectations and buyer traffic. Despite the increase, the index remains well below 50, a point that signals equal numbers of builders view real estate market trends as positive or negative.

In 2005, Wade Robson was the first defense witness at Michael Jackson's trial, where the singer was accused of molesting a 13-year-old cancer survivor. At the time, Robson was unequivocal: He was not sexually abused by the man known as the King of Pop. But eight years later, he has changed his tune.
Exclusively on TODAY Thursday, the 30-year-old choreographer told Matt Lauer that Jackson, who died in 2009, was "a pedophile and a child sexual abuser."
Robson said Jackson abused him from ages 7 to 14: Jackson "performed sexual acts on me and forced me to perform sexual acts on him."
Robson is currently asking a probate court to allow him to file a late creditor's claim against the Jackson estate, now that the deadline has passed for creditors to file such claims. His claim comes as a case brought by Jackson's family against AEG Live, promoters of his final concert tour, has begun in civil court.
Born in Australia, Robson was a dancing prodigy whose family relocated to the United States when he was 9; he appeared in three of Michael Jackson's videos: "Black or White," "Jam," and "Heal the World." In later years he went on to direct music videos and choreograph tours for artists including N'Sync and Britney Spears, and hosted and executive produced "The Wade Robson Project" for MTV in 2003. He joined "So You Think You Can Dance" on FOX in 2007 as a judge and choreographer.
So why now? Says Robson, he wasn't ready to face up to the truth until he began to realize how he would feel if a stranger molested his son, born two years ago. "This is not a case of repressed memory," said Robson. "I have never forgotten one moment of what Michael did to me, but I was psychologically and emotionally completely unable and unwilling to understand that it was sexual abuse."
During the first criminal investigation of Jackson in 1993 (when Robson was 11), Jackson would call him "every day" to "role play" and convince him that if anyone knew what they had done together, "both of us would go to jail for the rest of our lives."
He says there was no bribe money offered for him to lie on the stand -- nor, apparently, was it needed. "It was complete manipulation (by Jackson) and brainwashing," said Robson. "He would role play and train me for these (trial) scenarios."
Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for Jackson's estate, said in a statement: ?Mr. Robson has adamantly denied under oath and in numerous interviews over the past 20 years that Michael Jackson ever did anything inappropriate to him. He now wants us to believe that he committed perjury at least twice and has been lying to anyone and everyone about Mr. Jackson since the early ?90s so he can file a claim for money. Mr. Robson?s transparent lawsuit comes nearly 4 years after Michael passed. His claim is outrageous and sad.?
But this is not about landing some big book deal or payoff for silence, said Robson. "I've lived in silence and denial for 22 years and I can't spend another moment in that.... I'm never going to go away with this for the sake of money. I'm never going to be silenced for money. That's not going to happen."
Even today, however, Robson has mixed emotions about Jackson, and told Lauer what he thinks of when he does think of the singer is: "Heartbreak, pain, anger and compassion.... The image that one presents to the world is not the whole explanation of who someone is. Michael Jackson was yes, an incredibly talented artist with an incredible gift. He was many things. And he was also a pedophile and a child sexual abuser."
Later, Robson offered a special statement to TODAY, addressing other sexual abuse victims:
"There are millions of survivors of child sexual abuse out there who are suffering in silence and/or denial, as was I. If my coming forward and speaking my truth can help even one victim gain the courage to speak their truth and begin the healing process, that would be more than I could ever ask.
"I want to say to those victims that under NO circumstances was it or is it EVER your decision or your fault that you were sexually abused. Please find a way to safely speak your truth because the healing process cannot begin until you do. It is not easy in the slightest but it is absolutely possible to heal and get your life back."

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Bomb attacks in Shi'ite areas of Baghdad and in northern Iraq killed more than 30 people on Wednesday, following weeks of violence by Sunni Islamist insurgents determined to spark sectarian confrontation.
Tensions between minority Sunni Muslims and the Shi'ites who now lead Iraq are at their highest since U.S. troops pulled out in 2011, with relations coming under more pressure by the day from the largely sectarian conflict in neighboring Syria.
A string of car bombings hit Shi'ite neighborhoods across the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Wednesday evening, including one outside a cafe, killing at least 18 people, police said.
Earlier, 10 people were killed when two car bombs exploded near government buildings in the ethnically mixed oil city of Kirkuk.
"There were two bodies on the ground outside the building, people were shouting and it was a mess everywhere," said Rawaa Rahman, a government employee in Kirkuk who was wounded in the hand.
A suicide bomber on a motorcycle also blew himself up near a police patrol in northern Baghdad, killing at least two officers, while a roadside bomb killed a policeman in a town near Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) to the north, police and medical sources said.
Relations between Iraq's Shi'ite, Sunni and ethnic Kurdish communities have come under growing strain since the last American troops left in December 2011.
The coalition government, split among Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish political blocs, is hobbled by disagreements about how to share power.
But the conflict in neighboring Syria, where mostly Sunni rebels are trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad, has also put pressure on Iraq's delicate intercommunal balance.
Although violence is well below the height of sectarian slaughter in 2006-7, when tens of thousands were killed, Sunni Islamist insurgents now carry out attacks almost daily to try to undermine the Shi'ite-led government.
Al Qaeda's local wing, Islamic State of Iraq, and other Sunni insurgents are trying to use Syria's war to gain legitimacy and tap into frustrations among Iraqi Sunnis, hoping to regain ground they lost during their long battle with American troops.

Some of the most fantastical denizens of the ocean realm are invisible to the naked eye

In the June issue of Scientific American, Ronald Martin of the University of Delaware and Antonietta Quigg of Texas A&M University at Galveston explain how increases in the quantity and nutrient content of tiny plants called phytoplankton probably helped power the rise of the modern marine mammals. As so-called green phytoplankton gave way to red phytoplankton, so named for the type of chlorophyll they use during photosynthesis, a host of new sea creatures emerged, starting around 250 million years ago. The slide show below showcases some of the myriad intricate forms of red phytoplankton?a group that includes coccolithophores, dinoflagellates and diatoms?that populate the world?s oceans today.

But how does the new Google Drive system compare to the services provided by Dropbox??
By Matthew Shaer / May 13, 2013
EnlargeIn the past, Google offered non-premium users 10 gigabytes of free storage capacity on Gmail, and 5GB of storage capacity on Google Drive and Google+ Photos. Beginning today, Google will allow users to pick-and-choose how they "spend" that 15GB across the platforms. In other words, the overall capacity on Google Drive and Gmail isn't increasing, but your options are.?

"With this new combined storage space, you won?t have to worry about how much you?re storing and where. For example, maybe you?re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail," Google's Clay Bavor wrote on the company blog today. "Now it doesn?t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want."?
So how does the new policy stack up against other, similar services? Well, let's look at Dropbox, perhaps Google's most prominent competitor in the personal cloud storage arena. Dropbox (which, full disclosure, we use and like an awful lot) dishes out only 2GB of storage to users with a Dropbox Free account. Here's the catch: every time you refer a buddy to Dropbox, the company gives you 500MB of additional storage.?
Of course, you can't refer an infinite amount of pals ? the max amount of extra storage Dropbox will give you is 16GB, for a grand total of 18GB. That's bigger than what you'd get with Google, although Dropbox doesn't offer the easy Gmail/Drive synchronization you get with Google. Moreover, with Google, you'll get that free 16GB right off the bat, whereas with Dropbox, you're going to have to work for that storage capacity.?
Looking for other options? As TechSpot notes, Microsoft SkyDrive comes with 7GB of free storage and options from Amazon (Cloud Storage) and Apple (iCloud) both offer 5 free gigabytes.?
