Will Dodgers chase Hamels?
FORT MYERS, Fla. ? Wednesday?s news that the Los Angeles Dodgers had been sold for a whopping $2 billion to a group that includes former NBA great Magic Johnson and well-known baseball executive Stan Kasten was certainly noticed in the Phillies? front office.
The Dodgers are one of baseball?s premier franchises and you can bet that Johnson, Kasten and their deep-pocketed partners will be looking to bring the club to the top of the National League in a hurry.
You can also bet they will look to make a splashy talent acquisition to lead that rise, possibly a pitcher with Southern California roots, a great changeup and a World Series MVP trophy.
Of course, we?re talking about Cole Hamels, the Phillies? lefthander who could become a free agent after this season.
It is not difficult to envision Hamels pitching in Chavez Ravine wearing one of those brilliant white Dodgers? uniforms.Not difficult at all.
But, still, I don?t see it happening.
The Phillies have been trying to negotiate a contract extension with Hamels for months, and with opening day just eight days away you could say the negotiations have reached a critical stage. Though Hamels? side has not set any deadlines, Opening Day has to be considered a pivotal date for both sides because once the season starts Hamels? price tag can go up with a strong performance or down with a poor performance. There is also the risk of injury, a reality that came to the fore with the recent news that Hamels? former Phillies teammate, Ryan Madson, himself a potential free agent this winter, will need season-ending elbow surgery.
For months, the belief here has been that the Phillies will sign Hamels. He?s young (28), talented, home-grown and involved in the community ? all characteristics that the franchise and chief decision-maker David Montgomery value greatly. He helped the club win a World Series. At a time when this club?s position-player nucleus ? the hitters ? is getting old, it is important that the Phillies remain strong in the pitching department. Roy Halladay will be 35 this season. Cliff Lee will be 34. The Phils need Hamels to take the pitching staff into the future ? and they know that.
Both sides have been extremely tight-lipped about the negotiations, but throughout spring training there has been a feeling of general optimism around the Phillies that something will get done, maybe not by Opening Day, but not too far off into the season. One person with knowledge of the situation says the Phils know how much Hamels will cost ? $20 million or more per season ? and are set to pay it. The person said the length of the deal is an issue, that the Phillies would like to do a four-year deal and Hamels wants more. No surprise there as he would certainly get more years than that on the open market.
Another person with knowledge of the situation says the two sides have made good progress in negotiations and the person predicts a signing in the not-too-distant future.
Phillies fans aren?t the only ones curious to see how this drama plays out.

CA woman gets life term for murder of cancer-stricken husband to collect insurance
SANTA ANA, Calif. - On the night his cancer-stricken brother was stabbed to death, David Jessee knew his sister-in-law was somehow behind it.
A few years earlier, Jessee said, his brother Jack told him over a glass of wine before bowling that if anything ever happened to him, she would be to blame.
More than a decade later, a gray-haired Sandra Jessee was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for having Jack Jessee, her third husband, killed in their Orange County home in 1998.
Prosecutors said she wanted to avoid paying for his cancer treatment and to collect his insurance and other benefits. Jessee, now 61, and her son Thomas Aehlert hired a hit man to commit the killing then received more than $650,000 from the sale of the couple's Placentia home along with 401(k) death benefits and insurance, prosecutors said.
"She's just one of the most twisted defendants I've come across who would engage her own biological son in the murder of a man she's been married to for 15 years at probably the most vulnerable time in his life," Senior Deputy District Attorney Mike Murray said. "To see her finally get justice is very gratifying."
Defense attorney Derek Bercher said his client would appeal her conviction last year for murder for financial gain and conspiracy.
Authorities said Jessee recruited her son and his friend Brett Schrauben to kill Jack Jessee for $50,000. Both men testified against her after taking plea deals.
During Friday's sentencing, Jack Jessee's daughters and brother pleaded with Orange County Superior Court Judge James A. Stotler to impose a life sentence, which was required by her conviction.
"At first I wanted the death penalty, but I think it would be much better for her to sit and rot in jail," Chere Williams, one of the victim's daughters, told the court.
The case dates back to 1998, when Jack Jessee, then 56, was diagnosed with colon cancer. Described as tender and trusting by family, Jessee underwent surgery and was recovering when he returned to the hospital for an emergency surgery due to an infection, Murray said.
When a nurse tried to show Sandra Jessee how to help her husband with a colostomy bag that he would need to use temporarily, she refused to listen, Murray said.
"She was sickened by that," Murray said.
By then, the prosecutor said, Sandra Jessee had already enlisted help from her son and his friend to kill her ailing husband so she could move to Arizona, where Aehlert lived. Schrauben in turn recruited his friend Thomas Garrick, to help him carry out the job, prosecutors said.
On Aug. 13, 1998, Sandra Jesse told her husband she was going out to buy chicken nuggets and ice and stop at the bank. After more than an hour passed, Jack Jessee grew worried about her and called his daughter, Cheryl Deanda, who lived nearby, and asked for her help.
Deanda said she drove to the couple's house, but Sandra wasn't back yet. So she took a spin around a nearby shopping center to see if she could find her.
When she returned to her father's home 15 minutes later, she found him stabbed to death on the living room floor.
"They say I'm lucky to be alive," Deanda said. "They think the guy was still there when I came back."
Jessee's wife was a suspect from the beginning. But Placentia police didn't have enough evidence to charge her and the case went cold.
In 2005, Orange County sheriff's investigators began reviewing the evidence, particularly a strip of paper retrieved from Jessee's purse during a police interview after the murder. The name on the paper was Schrauben, which investigators matched to a tip received a few years earlier, Murray said.
In 2007, Sandra Jessee and Aehlert were arrested in Arizona and brought to stand trial in Orange County. They were both put on trial, and a jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of their conviction in 2009.
Last year, Aehlert struck a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He testified during his mother's retrial last year, along with Schrauben, who pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter in a deal with the district attorney's office in 2008.
A jury deliberated only four hours in December before convicting Sandra Jessee. The conviction carries a required life sentence, but Judge Stotler on Friday told the woman wearing thick glasses and a jail jumpsuit that he would not have granted her probation even if the law had allowed it.
The sentence was welcomed by Jack Jessee's family, who lamented how he has missed seeing his grandchildren grow up and attend college, and his daughter get married.
A hearing is scheduled for May 4 to discuss restitution for the victim's family.
Aehlert is set to be sentenced in September. Schrauben, who has been released from jail, is scheduled to be sentenced in July.
Garrick has pleaded not guilty and has yet to stand trial.
The case has not ended for Jack Jessee's family, but on Friday his relatives said they were relieved at the prospect of no longer having to see Sandra Jessee in court.
"This is like a 14-year ordeal that has come almost to completion," David Jessee told reporters. "This was my sister-in-law who put this whole thing together and she is going to spend the rest of her life where she belongs, thinking about this."

Taliban bomber kills 5 rival militants in Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? A Taliban suicide bomber attacked the headquarters of a rival group Friday in northwest Pakistan, killing at least five fighters in the second such bombing this month, militants and a government official said.
Clashes among insurgents are common along the Afghan border, where tribal loyalties hold sway and the government has little or no control. The militants are often competing over proceeds from smuggling, kidnapping and drug production.
Over the last year, the Pakistani Taliban and Lashkar-e-Islam have been battling for control of the Tirah Valley, a remote part of the Khyber tribal region where Friday's attack occurred. The two bombings this month indicate an escalation of that fight.
Pakistani security forces also have been battling the militants in Tirah, who threaten the nearby city of Peshawar.
The bombing killed at least five members of Lashkar-e-Islam, said Bakhtiyar Khan, a government administrator in Khyber.
Hazrat Omar, a spokesman for the group, told The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location that six fighters and two passers-by died.
Mohammed Afridi, a Pakistani Taliban spokesman in Khyber, claimed responsibility for the attack in another phone call with the AP.
A Taliban suicide bomber carried out a similar attack on Lashkar-e-Islam's headquarters on March 2, killing 23 militants. The Taliban said at the time that the bombing was in revenge for an attack last month that killed members of the group.
The Pakistani Taliban is one of Pakistan's deadliest militant groups, and has links to al-Qaida and insurgents fighting across the border in Afghanistan. Its commanders are based in the border region, but the group has allied networks throughout the country.
Security forces have launched offensives in many border regions over the last four years, losing hundreds of men and killing thousands of alleged militants. But attacks still occur regularly in the country.
A bomb hidden inside a radio exploded on a military base in northwest Pakistan on Thursday, killing a paramilitary soldier and his 10-year-old son as they were listening to the Asia Cup cricket final between Pakistan and Bangladesh, intelligence officials said.
Three other children were wounded in the attack at a base in Wana, the main town in the South Waziristan tribal area, a key Pakistani Taliban stronghold that was targeted in a large military offensive in 2009, the officials said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media
Authorities are investigating how the bomb was planted in the radio.

"I feel like so much of who I am is Peeta," Hutcherson told MTV News recently. "It drove me crazy during the audition process, because I was like, 'This is so me, it hurts. If I don't get this, I'm not even good at being me, so now what am I? I have no idea what to do next.' "
And when we caught up with the young man behind the boy with the bread during the film's press day, we asked if there was anything he and Peeta don't have in common.
"Peeta has a hard time saying how he feels to women. I have the opposite problem," Hutcherson admitted. "I say it too soon, so we're different in that respect. But, honestly, we're very similar in so many ways it's kind of hard to pick out the difference."
When asked whether his upfront approach in revealing his feelings too soon works in his favor, the "Journey 2" actor had no problem admitting defeat.
"Not at all," he said of his method's effectiveness. "I think I should probably adopt more of Peeta's strategy and maybe play it cool a little longer."

Trans/Love:Radical Sex, Love & Relationships Beyond the Gender ...

Before I can explain my impression of Morty Diamond?s latest release, Trans/Love (Manic D Press), I first must admit something.
I did not want to read this book.
This would not always have been true. In fact, after the first na?ve years following my coming out as trans, I read every single trans-related book, blog, and scholarly article that I could set my eyes on. Buoyant, freed, and scared shitless in my new identity, I scoured every single bit of media for information and reflection. At the time, Diamond?s first book, From The Inside-Out: Radical Gender Transformation, FTM and Beyond, was a crucial text for me, one of the most comprehensive, validating, and liberating that I read. Isolated as I was in a tiny Southern town, these books constituted my connection to a community I deeply hoped to someday find.
Those days are long over. Disillusioned now, jaded and bereft of my former fantasies of solidarity on the mere basis of shared identity, I?ve become the person that asks famous transgender writers, aren?t you sick of talking about trans content? Whenever I begrudgingly slip into the chafing skin of ?trans writer,? my first questions to editors typically is, do I have to write about trans stuff? To my partner? incidentally, also trans? I frequently moan, after yet another trans 101 session with my kid?s principal, the gas station attendant, my CNA instructor? I am so sick of trans crap.
When I was asked to read this book, my shoulders sagged. Sure, one reviewer claimed that readers were wrong to think they knew what was in Trans/Love. But I figured he said that because he was dating a contributor.
As it turns out, he was. But he was also right: I didn?t know what was in Trans/Love.
I mean, yes, it does contain what many similarly jaded would immediately denote ?trans crap.? People talk about their bodies, their identities, and how they have sex with their bodies and identities. Some people describe their coming out. But, there is a wonderful saving grace to Trans/Love, even for cranks like me.
It?s funny.
Laugh out loud funny.
And it is dead on.
To see what I mean, start with Shawna Virago?s Jolly Jumper. Nothing else I?ve read touches so eloquently on the potential disappointment of mixing fantasy with assumption. Expecting to get thoroughly topped, the protagonist is instead, well, shall we say? surprised. Very, very surprised. (There is a baby bonnet involved. Need I say more?)
Continue on to Amos Mac?s Daddy Issues. For those trans/gender variant readers who have worked or? considered working in sex trade, this story will reflect some of the finer dilemmas of deciding which gender to hawk. For readers who haven?t, read on to find out what it?s like to get paid to pose as a woman and piss on someone.
Megan K. Pickett?s Free and Phyllis Pseudonym?s City Hall are also seriously lol-worthy.
Trans/Love is a book that goes beyond asking ?oh my god I?m transgender how will I ever find love? to revealing the answers: Craigslist. Poorly lit bars. The theater. The basement floor of a Sunday school. Craigslist.
Beyond the sharp humor, a variety of identities are spoken to in Trans/Love, including those that frequently go unacknowledged. So if you are searching for more relates on how fat informs queer community currency (Fat, Trans, and Single: Some Thoughts from an ?Othered? Body on Control, Alienation, and Liberation, Joelle Ruby Ryan); how racism structures a transition from ?just a girl that nobody noticed? to ?a stain in a sea of white men?, ?a terrorist? (Milk, Please, Patch Avery); further reflections on the stay-at-home trans dad life; balance, bravery, and bliss in a serodiscordant couple (Fifty Reasons I Love My Man, Bryn Kelly); or the complexities of being a trans parent, much of that is here, and more. Even I found bits of myself across the book that had never been reflected before, and was surprised by the warmth it brought to my crusty, dried-up heart.
That being said, I found that I mostly enjoyed the parts of the book where trans identities and trans-narratives were related to the story, but not the central theme. I preferred the stories where I laughed with that delicious mix of delight and disbelief- oh no they didn?t!- not merely because of content, but because the author is a bitching good writer, snarky and vicious and expertly touching the low catty heart of us all. I delighted in the stories where unusual turns of phrases, lyrical language, bold sexy rhythms, and experimentation turned the too-familiar fresh again. (In particular, check out Believing is Seeing, by Silas Howard; B4T, by Imani Henry; In This Dungeon All of the Prisoners Are Free to Leave, by Cooper Lee Bombardier, and the exquisite On Not Fucking or Running in Hue, by Aren Z. Aizura.) I moved with the writers, carried along by the stories where trans protagonists connected to wider universal truths, like confusion, isolation, the struggles of parents to overcome generational pain to care for their own children, or the disappointment of finding your fantasy butch Daddy in a diaper.
I turned the pages on these stories proud to be a trans writer, proud to be part of a witty, nasty, brilliant community of poetic perverts and wicked wordsmiths, wall-walkers who simultaneous manage to celebrate the peculiarities of our kind while sensuously stroking the taut chord of common humanity.
More of that, y?all, please. More of that.

Police arrested 25 people in a prostitution sweep in New Britain Thursday, including a man who brought his child along during his alleged search for a prostitute.
Gonzalo Paredes, 32, of New Britian was charged with patronizing a prostitute and risk of injury to or impairing the morals of children. He was picked up while trying to solicit a prostitute Wednesday evening, police said.??Paredes' child was in the car?when he was arrested.??Police did not release the child's age.

Louise Watts, America's Next Top Model Contestant, Storms Off Stage in EPIC Meldtown
Louise Watts made America's Next Top Model history this week.
During the judging phase of the episode, the 25-year-old became fed up with the panel's feedback, threw a fit, stormed off the set cursing and did not return!
Trouble started brewing during makeovers, when Louise refused to cut and color her long blond hair (she eventually conceded). Then tensions boiled over.
What set the Watts off was judge Kelly Cutrone's critique during a photo shoot. What went down after that shocked judges, contestants and viewers alike.
