Quadrantids meteor shower will create brief, beautiful show on Jan. 4

ScienceDaily (Dec. 28, 2011) ? The 2012 Quadrantids, a little-known meteor shower named after an extinct constellation, will present an excellent chance for hardy souls to start the year off with some late-night meteor watching.

Peaking in the wee morning hours of Jan. 4, the Quadrantids have a maximum rate of about 100 per hour, varying between 60-200. The waxing gibbous moon will set around 3 a.m. local time, leaving about two hours of excellent meteor observing before dawn. It's a good thing, too, because unlike the more famous Perseid and Geminid meteor showers, the Quadrantids only last a few hours -- it's the morning of Jan. 4, or nothing.

Like the Geminids, the Quadrantids originate from an asteroid, called 2003 EH1. Dynamical studies suggest that this body could very well be a piece of a comet which broke apart several centuries ago, and that the meteors you will see before dawn on Jan. 4 are the small debris from this fragmentation. After hundreds of years orbiting the sun, they will enter our atmosphere at 90,000 mph, burning up 50 miles above Earth's surface -- a fiery end to a long journey!

The Quadrantids derive their name from the constellation of Quadrans Muralis (mural quadrant), which was created by the French astronomer Jerome Lalande in 1795. Located between the constellations of Bootes and Draco, Quadrans represents an early astronomical instrument used to observe and plot stars. Even though the constellation is no longer recognized by astronomers, it was around long enough to give the meteor shower -- first seen in 1825 -- its name.

Given the location of the radiant -- northern tip of Bootes the Herdsman -- only northern hemisphere observers will be able to see Quadrantids.

(AP) ? A teenager was fatally stabbed Monday after an argument broke out in a sports store on London's most famous retail street as thousands of shoppers flocked to Britain's capital seeking post-Christmas bargains.

The killing of the 18-year-old man on Oxford Street ? and a second wounding in the same road ? did little to deter shoppers crowding into neighboring stores in the landmark shopping district. Bargain hunters were also largely untroubled by a subway strike which badly disrupted the city's public transport services.

Selfridges ? close to the scene of Monday's stabbing and one of Britain's most popular department stores ? reported its biggest ever first hour of trading Monday morning, while the New West End Company, which represents traders on central London's shopping streets, reported 15 million pounds (US$23.5 million) in sales in the first three hours of trading.

"As ever, the West End's Boxing Day sales have attracted shoppers in their hundreds of thousands," said Jace Tyrrell, of the New West End Company.

Sue West, Selfridges' director of operations, said that ladies' accessories and jewelry were the most popular items snapped up. "Despite Tube disruptions ... we had record sales in our first hour," West said.

London's air ambulance helicopter had earlier rushed to the street following the fatal stabbing. Authorities said the teenage victim died before medics could administer help.

Police erected a tent outside a Foot Locker sports store as they carried out investigations and confirmed that ten people had been arrested in connection with the death.

Officers said a second stabbing took place close by ? on the corner of Oxford Street and Regent Street ? but insisted it wasn't immediately known if the two incidents were linked.

Det. Chief Insp. Mark Dunne, of London's Metropolitan police, said two groups of young people appeared to have become involved in a large-scale altercation before the teenager's death.

Dunne said that little more was known about the circumstances, but there were likely to be large numbers of witnesses. "This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now, on the busiest shopping day," he told reporters at the scene.

"A number of weapons have been recovered from that scene ? whether I have got the murder weapon I don't know. There's an assortment of items, but no guns," he said.

On London's subway network, the ASLEF train drivers' labor union staged a one-day strike to demand extra pay and additional time off for members working on the public holiday.

Despite the disruptions, huge crowds ? some lining up outside stores from midnight ? rushed into department stores in London and other British cities as soon as doors opened early Monday.

The London Underground, the organization that manages the subway system, condemned the move, saying it was pointless and demonstrated "a complete disregard for our customers." Authorities said extra buses were running in main shopping areas to cater to the increased flow of travelers on one of the year's busiest shopping days.

The ASLEF union has warned it plans to stage three more strikes in January and February if the dispute is not resolved.

6 books you should resolve to read in 2012

It?s common practice, as the year draws to a close, to reflect on the past twelve months ? to think back on what you did, how you spent your time, and who you spent it with. My years, more than anything, are shaped by books so when I look back I?m thinking about what I read. The same goes for thinking about the year to come: When I make my New Year?s resolutions, it?s pretty much just a long list of books that I want to get my hands on. And so, in looking forward to 2012, here are some things that I?ve already gotten my hands on; it would be wise of you to do the same. If what I?m reading (and loving) is any indication, 2012 is going to be a strange and wonderful year.

- Rachel Meier, Monitor contributor

An enchanting (couldn?t resist) retelling of a classic Russian fairy tale, except this time it?s set in Alaska, circa 1920. Mabel and Jack are newcomers to Alaska and are being pulled apart by desolation and loneliness. Unable to conceive, the couple remains childless and the strain of maintaining their farm has pushed them to the edge of their capacity. In a rare moment of playfulness, the couple builds a child out of snow. Shortly thereafter, a child called Faina appears ? ethereal, bewitching, and mysterious. Ivey creates a world out of emptiness and populates it in completely unexpected ways.

Free on iTunes: 2 Free iPad Games for The Adventurer

If I had to name a game genre that I?m attracted to most it would be dungeon crawlers, the cooperative sort like Gauntlet and Diablo. If I had to choose I?d pick Diablo, hands down. Whereas Gauntlet was designed to keep your trigger finger well exercised, Diablo gave you a bit more to do. Rooting around dank dungeons and dark caves, smacking up all manner of beasts, collecting stuff and building up your in-game alter ego from a wimp to an absolute badass was just part of the fun. The game took on a whole new shine when you enlisted help from other players, and they could be anywhere in the world from sleepless in Seattle to wide awake in Kuwait.

Much fun was had playing Diablo. Much fun.

There are installments in the Diablo franchise and fans eagerly await Diablo III, which promises to provide a more immersive, interactive environment. While waiting, many iOS users have sated their dungeon rooting desires in the Diablo-esque game, Dungeon Hunter.

The original Dungeon Hunter lacked the sophistication and the graphics of Diablo. After all it was designed to be played on mobile phones with small screens and limited control options. Still it managed to provide much of the feel of Diablo and it was a helluva lot of fun to play.

Dungeon Hunter 2 introduced co-op gameplay and better graphics. Dungeoneers rejoiced. The hours spent hacking through legions of dungeon denizens with virtual comrades racked up, and soon, just with the Diablo series, gamers hotly anticipated the next installment of Dungeon Hunter.

Now, Dungeon Hunter 3 is available for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. It?s over 400mb, it?s pretty, and, perhaps best of all, it?s free. However, if you?re looking for a game similar to the previous two versions, look elsewhere, Dungeon Hunter 3 is something else.

Dungeon Hunter 3

Gone is the the co-op adventuring, the exploration, the quests, and the classic battles. It?s all been replaced by a system of arenas where waves of bad guys come after you. Clear an arena by dispatching these beasts and the arena boss, do that and you move on the another arena. There are 20 arenas in each of four worlds.

dungeon hunter 3

You pay real money for fake dough

There is character building, but it is tightly interwoven with a new in-app purchase system, and to advance you either pay to learn new skills or repeat the arena until your character gains enough cash to upgrade. In fact, advancing in the game seem to rely heavily on purchases of upgrades.

After playing a few rounds I decided this isn?t for me. The fighting system gets repetitive quickly, which would be ok if there was a goal or story to complete, but really, there isn?t.

dungon hunter 3

That gonna hurt in the morning!

Whoever said, ?good things come to those who wait,? never played Dungeon Hunter 3. Some may like it, but true dungeoneers will likely want to pass this one by. Frankly, I?d rather pay six to ten buck for a game I like then get nickeled to death in a game I don?t like.

Luckily, here?s one I do like. Lord of the Rings: Middle Earth Defense is not a dungeon game and never claims to be. No pretense here. It?s a themed tower defense game with a bit of something extra from the movies of the same name to make it interesting.

LOR: ME Defense

In each level you place your defenses to halt, or at least greatly thin the number Sauron?s minion who bent on running rampant through Middle Earth. You have at your command various types of defense elements.

For instance, Legolas is great at close-in combat, the Hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin) are range fighters, throwing rocks and such. As levels advance and you earn more gold you can dispatch more powerful units into the fray such as elvin archers, dwarves, and even elvin magic! Some characters have special attacks as well. You?ll need all of it and more because there seems to be no end to Sauron?s evil.

LOR:ME Defense

As you progress the story also moves along, which enriches the experience. The graphics are adequate. The controls, especially for using the special attacks, are a little confusing, but once you get through it a few times you get the hang of it.

LOR:ME Defense

You don?t have to be a fan of Tolkien, the Ring movies, or tower defense games to enjoy this, but if you are then Lord of the Rings: Middle Earth Defense is a must.

That?s a wrap for this week. More free quest games below with direct links.

Neuroscientists demonstrate crucial advances in 'brain reading'

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

At UCLA's Laboratory of Integrative Neuroimaging Technology, researchers use functional MRI brain scans to observe brain signal changes that take place during mental activity. They then employ computerized machine learning (ML) methods to study these patterns and identify the cognitive state ? or sometimes the thought process ? of human subjects. The technique is called "brain reading" or "brain decoding."

In a new study, the UCLA research team describes several crucial advances in this field, using fMRI and machine learning methods to perform "brain reading" on smokers experiencing nicotine cravings.

The research, presented last week at the Neural Information Processing Systems' Machine Learning and Interpretation in Neuroimaging workshop in Spain, was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is interested in using these method to help people control drug cravings.

In this study on addiction and cravings, the team classified data taken from cigarette smokers who were scanned while watching videos meant to induce nicotine cravings. The aim was to understand in detail which regions of the brain and which neural networks are responsible for resisting nicotine addiction specifically, and cravings in general, said Dr. Ariana Anderson, a postdoctoral fellow in the Integrative Neuroimaging Technology lab and the study's lead author.

"We are interested in exploring the relationships between structure and function in the human brain, particularly as related to higher-level cognition, such as mental imagery," Anderson said. "The lab is engaged in the active exploration of modern data-analysis approaches, such as machine learning, with special attention to methods that reveal systems-level neural organization."

For the study, smokers sometimes watched videos meant to induce cravings, sometimes watched "neutral" videos and at sometimes watched no video at all. They were instructed to attempt to fight nicotine cravings when they arose.

The data from fMRI scans taken of the study participants was then analyzed. Traditional machine learning methods were augmented by Markov processes, which use past history to predict future states. By measuring the brain networks active over time during the scans, the resulting machine learning algorithms were able to anticipate changes in subjects' underlying neurocognitive structure, predicting with a high degree of accuracy (90 percent for some of the models tested) what they were watching and, as far as cravings were concerned, how they were reacting to what they viewed.

"We detected whether people were watching and resisting cravings, indulging in them, or watching videos that were unrelated to smoking or cravings," said Anderson, who completed her Ph.D. in statistics at UCLA. "Essentially, we were predicting and detecting what kind of videos people were watching and whether they were resisting their cravings."

In essence, the algorithm was able to complete or "predict" the subjects' mental states and thought processes in much the same way that Internet search engines or texting programs on cell phones anticipate and complete a sentence or request before the user is finished typing. And this machine learning method based on Markov processes demonstrated a large improvement in accuracy over traditional approaches, the researchers said.

Machine learning methods, in general, create a "decision layer" ? essentially a boundary separating the different classes one needs to distinguish. For example, values on one side of the boundary might indicate that a subject believes various test statements and, on the other, that a subject disbelieves these statements. Researchers have found they can detect these believe?disbelieve differences with high accuracy, in effect creating a lie detector. An innovation described in the new study is a means of making these boundaries interpretable by neuroscientists, rather than an often obscure boundary created by more traditional methods, like support vector machine learning.

"In our study, these boundaries are designed to reflect the contributed activity of a variety of brain sub-systems or networks whose functions are identifiable ? for example, a visual network, an emotional-regulation network or a conflict-monitoring network," said study co-author Mark S. Cohen, a professor of neurology, psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at UCLA's Staglin Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and a researcher at the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA.

"By projecting our problem of isolating specific networks associated with cravings into the domain of neurology, the technique does more than classify brain states ? it actually helps us to better understand the way the brain resists cravings," added Cohen, who also directs UCLA's Neuroengineering Training Program.

Remarkably, by placing this problem into neurological terms, the decoding process becomes significantly more reliable and accurate, the researchers said. This is especially significant, they said, because it is unusual to use prior outcomes and states in order to inform the machine learning algorithms, and it is particularly challenging in the brain because so much is unknown about how the brain works.

Machine learning typically involves two steps: a "training phase" in which the computer evaluates a set of known outcomes ? say, a bunch of trials in which a subject indicated belief or disbelief ? and a second, "prediction" phase in which the computer builds a boundary based on that knowledge.

In future research, the neuroscientists said, they will be using these machine learning methods in a biofeedback context, showing subjects real-time brain readouts to let them know when they are experiencing cravings and how intense those cravings are, in the hopes of training them to control and suppress those cravings.

But since this clearly changes the process and cognitive state for the subject, the researchers said, they may face special challenges in trying to decode a "moving target" and in separating the "training" phase from the "prediction" phase.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Verizon Wireless)

How much does Android 4.0 mean to you? How much do you need to have it right now? Because that's the dilemma with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone ($299-$649). Overall it's not quite as good a phone as the Motorola Droid RAZR ($299, 4.5 stars). But right now, it's the only phone running Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), and that's the future.

In many ways, this is the ultimate early adopter phone. The phone itself isn't perfect; typically, Nexus phones aren't the best hardware on the market. But the software takes a major leap forward, with everything from a better Gmail experience to a faster browser and the ability to put folders on your home screens. Do you need that right now? Then yes, you need the Nexus.

Physical Design
The Galaxy Nexus is a well-built but not extraordinary Samsung phone?which is to say, it's a giant piece of relatively well-engineered plastic. There's none of the metal and glass accents you see on top-of-the-line Motorola or Apple phones.

It's huge, though. This is physically the biggest phone I've seen recently, measuring 5.3 by 2.7 by 0.4 with a sprawling 4.65-inch, 1,280-by-720 Super AMOLED screen. The display is too big for people with smaller thumbs to use one-handed, but the Droid RAZR?which is almost the same size?has the same problem. Folks with smaller hands should consider the iPhone 4S or, to stick with Android, the Motorola Droid Bionic ($199, 4.5 stars). It isn't that heavy at 5.13 ounces, but I felt like my thumb got a major workout dragging down the notification pane even compared with my own HTC Sensation ($199, 4.5 stars), which is a pretty big phone.

There's a 1-megapixel camera on the front, a 5-megapixel camera on the back, Power and Volume buttons on the sides, and a standard 3.5mm headset jack on the bottom panel. The Galaxy Nexus has a removable battery,?but there's no memory card slot to add to the 28.13GB of internal memory. More importantly, especially for Mac users, no memory card means no Mass Storage mode, which means having to use an awkward separate file transfer app to upload and download files on Macs. (Windows PCs have no such problems.)

Voice and Battery Performance
The Galaxy Nexus isn't a great voice phone, and our unit had some bizarre problems reporting reception. Using the dBm signal strength numbers in the Android settings panel, the Nexus would generally show weaker reception than a Droid RAZR sitting right next to it. The phone also had serious trouble recovering from a dropped 4G signal; after falling to 3G, sometimes it would need a reboot to find 4G again. But in any condition with a decent 4G signal, I got faster speeds on Speedtest.net on the Nexus than on the RAZR. Clearly, there are some firmware issues to be worked out here.

Voice calls were disappointing: tinny, thready, and scratchy, with volume wobble in the earpiece and an extremely harsh tone on the other end. Just to check, I compared calls with a Droid RAZR in the same location, and the RAZR came through clearer and warmer. The speakerphone delivers moderate volume, and the phone does a good job cancelling background noise. The Nexus worked very well with our Jawbone Icon?Bluetooth headset ($99, 4 stars) ?as well as with our Altec Lansing?BackBeat?stereo Bluetooth headphones ($99, 3.5 stars). Voice dialing was spot on.

The Galaxy Nexus connects to Verizon's 3G CDMA EVDO Rev A and 4G LTE networks, as well as to Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. I got excellent speeds on the 4G LTE network, consistently better than the Droid RAZR: Downloads ranged from 5.2Mbps up to a stunning 20.7Mbps, and uploads ranged from 4Mbps to 9.5Mbps. You can share your connection with up to 10 devices as a Wi-Fi hotspot, so it's great that ICS now includes an easy-to-read settings pane showing your moment-by-moment and app-by-app data usage.

The phone also supports NFC, but Verizon has declined to allow Google Wallet, so the functionality is pretty much useless for now.?

The Nexus has decent but not excellent battery life, with 5 hours and 58 minutes of talk time in our tests. While that's fine, and the phone will probably last a day in normal use, the Droid RAZR lasted much longer with 8 hours and 42 minutes.

Performance and Apps
The Nexus is built around a dual-core TI OMAP4460 processor running at 1.2GHz. Performance on the overall Antutu system benchmark put the Galaxy Nexus safely in the top range of Android smartphones, although it's bested by the Droid RAZR on Verizon and Samsung's Galaxy S II Skyrocket ($299, 4.5 stars) on AT&T. Where the ICS advantage shows up is in browsing: The Galaxy Nexus killed every Gingerbread phone other than the Droid RAZR on the Browsermark browsing benchmark. That's because ICS incorporates dramatic browser improvements which began in Android 3.0, Honeycomb.?

And, oh, what a better browser it is! I go into more detail in my Ice Cream Sandwich review, but the ICS browser is a major improvement from the Gingerbread browser. My favorite new options are the ability to easily disable mobile Web sites and switch to desktop versions, and the "read offline" button. Web pages look super-sharp on the 1,280-by-720 screen. Adobe Flash 11 plays smoothly, as well.

"I'm not looking," the 31-year-old added.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Kim's estranged NBA player husband was asked earlier this month if he still loved Kim following their split. The 26-year-old athlete dodged the question during his "Good Morning America" appearance.

"I'm focused on just what I can control," he said at the time.

Glam Media moves closer to IPO, filing seen in Q2 (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Glam Media, the women's lifestyle online publishing and advertising company, is close to selecting bankers to lead an initial stock offering slated for 2012, according to people familiar with the matter.

Investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are in the running to lead Glam Media's IPO, the people said, following a selection process that involved presentations from roughly a dozen firms.

While no final decision has been made on the exact timing of Glam's IPO, people close to the situation say the company is aiming to file a prospectus in the second quarter of 2012, with a potential offering slated for the third or fourth quarter of the year.

Glam Media declined to comment.

Glam's plans to float shares to the public come as several of its online peer companies have made similar moves.

On Tuesday, Jive Software made its Wall Street debut with shares jumping 25 percent on their first day of trading. Social game company Zynga is expected to price its IPO on Thursday.

Facebook, the world's No.1 Internet social networking company, is preparing for an IPO in 2012, a source familiar with the matter previously told Reuters.

Glam, which was launched in 2005, was the 10th most visited online property in the U.S. in October, according to comScore, with roughly 85 million unique visitors.

Glam was valued at $950 million when it acquired social networking service Ning for $150 million earlier this year, sources said.

The "bake-off" process in which banks pitch their services to handle Glam's IPO wrapped up a few weeks ago and Glam is currently deciding which firms will lead the offering. Bank of America, Citi and Credit Suisse are also in the running to have a role in the offering, according to the sources.

December's Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight (SPACE.com)

The Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight (Dec. 13), but interested skywatchers might have to battle chilly temperatures and bright moonlight.

The annual Geminids shower is usually one of the most spectacular light shows of the year, but this time around, the vivid and nearly full moon is threatening to take center stage instead.

On Dec. 10, lunar observers were treated to a stunning total lunar eclipse, and the moon's dazzling light in the night sky is expected to make it difficult to spot Geminids as the shower reaches its peak tonight.

"This year, folks will get a nice double whammy with the lunar eclipse on the 10th, and then the Geminid peak on the night of the 13th, but it would be nice if we could just turn off the moon after the eclipse," Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environments Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsvilla, Ala., told SPACE.com.

December's light show

The annual Geminid meteor shower has become known as one of the most impressive of the year, sometimes even eclipsing the more famous Perseid meteor shower that occurs every August.

"It's a relatively young meteor shower," Cooke said. "It didn't really turn on until the 1830s, and it may have been first seen from a Mississippi river boat back then. But they've been gradually increasing in strength over the years, and now they're the strongest meteor shower of the year." [Most Amazing Leonid?Meteor Shower?Photos]

The Geminids shower also features slow and bright meteors, with some of them appearing yellowish in color, said astronomer Joe Rao, SPACE.com's skywatching columnist. On a clear night, skywatchers have reported seeing up to 120 meteors per hour during the peak of the Geminids in previous years.

This year, however, skywatchers will likely see about half that rate, Cooke said.

"There will probably be around 40 or 50 per hour on the night of the 13th," he said. "Unlike the Perseids, it will be really cold, so folks need to remember to dress warm. The Geminids are noted for bright meteors, and there can be a lot of them. The shower is probably the best meteor shower to watch when the moon isn't getting in the way. So, if you can brave the cold, the Geminids will not disappoint, in general."

Lighting up the night sky

Occasionally, the Geminids can produce stunning fireballs, and if that happens this year, they should be bright enough to see even with the moonlight.

Meteors are often referred to as "shooting stars," but these streaks of light actually come from pieces of debris that hit Earth's atmosphere and burn up. Larger pieces that dive through the atmosphere can cause unusually bright meteors, which are called fireballs.

Most meteor showers are the remnants of comets, but the Geminids are a little different. The source of these meteors is a strange asteroid called 3200 Phaethon, which sheds bits of dusty debris.

This space rock orbits closer to the sun than any other known asteroid, coming well inside Mercury's orbit. This behavior makes 3200 Phaethon more like a comet than an asteroid, astronomers have said, but it the object has never exhibited any other features that would classify it as a comet, such as a coma, gas jets or a tail.

The Geminid meteor shower gets its name from the constellation Gemini, since the meteors appear to radiate from this point in the sky. When we look toward this spot, we are actually looking into the line of 3200 Phaethon's orbit, scientists have said.

While this year's Geminid meteor shower may be more subdued, next year's light shows are already showing more promise. The Quadrantids will be the next major meteor shower; skywatchers can expect these to peak on the night of Jan. 3, 2012.

The rest of the 2012 meteor shower lineup looks to be more impressive, with moonlight becoming less of a factor as the year progresses, Cooke said.

"Next year will be a better year for meteor showers, as far as moonlight is concerned," he said.

Editor's Note: If you do happen to catch a photo of the Geminids this year, and would like to share it for a possible story or gallery on SPACE.com, please email managing editor Tariq Malik at tmalik@space.com.

Merck to build Asian R&D center in Beijing (AP)

TRENTON, N.J. ? Drugmaker Merck & Co. is setting up a new research and development headquarters for Asia in Beijing.

The company said Tuesday that the center's first phase, set to be completed by 2014, will have capacity for about 600 employees spread over about 506,000 square feet of laboratory and office space. They'll be working on discovering potential new drugs, testing them in the lab and then people, getting regulatory approval and doing other research programs.

Merck says the new center is part of its $1.5 billion commitment to invest in such work in China over the next five years. The center will be in Wangjing Park, a rapidly expanding science and technology park in the Chinese capital.

"By strategically locating in China, we are able to complement our existing R&D capabilities, and facilitate new collaborations with scientists in the region and across emerging markets," Peter S. Kim, president of Merck Research Laboratories, said in a statement.

Like most other major drugmakers, Merck sees its revenue leveling off in Western countries, so it's aiming to boost sales in emerging markets, where governments and a growing middle class are spending more on health care. Those include the two most populous nations, China and India, as well as Russia, Brazil and Mexico.

Along with adding new sales offices in cities across China, Merck and its rivals are building new research centers there and in other parts of Asia, as well as factories that can produce medicines cheaply enough that local residents can afford them and the companies can still make a profit.

They are generally employing many local workers or setting up partnerships with local companies to help build familiarity with their brands, create goodwill with government officials and win government health program contracts.

Merck noted that two diseases that are part of its research and treatment focus, diabetes and heart disease, are becoming increasingly common in China.

The company has its commercial headquarters for China in Shanghai and has manufacturing plants at other locations across China.

Eye-Fi Connect X2

The Eye-Fi Connect X2 ($49.99 direct) is a 4GB memory card for digital cameras. It features a Wi-Fi modem, compatible with 802.11n networks, that makes it possible to wirelessly offload photos from your camera to your computer, Android, or iOS device. You can also configure the Eye-Fi card to upload photos to photo sharing sites, including Flickr, Picasa, and Facebook.

Most current cameras are compatible with Eye-Fi cards, but if you have an older model you'll want to check on its compatibility. Using the card eliminates the hassle of connecting your camera to your computer via an often-proprietary cable, or removing the SD card for use in your PC's card reader. Eye-Fi also markets the Mobile X2 ($79.99, 4 stars) and Pro X2 ($149.99, 4 stars) memory cards, both of which hold up to 8GB of photos. Save the difference in capacity, the Mobile X2 offers the same feature set as the Connect X2. The Pro X2 adds support for Raw images, automatic geotagging, and Wi-Fi hotspot access.

Ray Rice runs Ravens over Browns 24-10

Ray Rice, Marshal Yanda, Phillip Taylor, Chris Gocong

By TOM WITHERS

updated 7:33 p.m. ET Dec. 4, 2011

CLEVELAND - As Ray Lewis watched from the sideline, Baltimore's other Ray ran roughshod over the Browns.

Ray Rice rushed for a career-high 204 yards, breaking loose on a game-changing 67-yarder in the third quarter, and the Ravens kept pace with Pittsburgh atop the AFC North by pounding Cleveland 24-10 on Sunday.

Rice and Ricky Williams had short touchdown runs and Lardarius Webb returned a punt 68 yards for a TD for the Ravens (9-3), who toyed with the Browns (4-8). Baltimore racked up 290 yards rushing, and were in such control that quarterback Joe Flacco took a knee three times to run out the final two minutes.

The Ravens turned to Rice on a blustery, misting day, when Flacco had trouble throwing and kicker Billy Cundiff missed a pair of field-goal attempts.

Cleveland lost for the fifth time in six games, and the banged-up Browns have just three days to prepare for the Steelers.

One play after Cleveland closed within 10-3, Rice broke the Browns' backs with his long run.

Taking the handoff from Flacco at his own 27, Rice swept left, found a seam and cut back to the middle of the field. He was able to pull away from a bunch of pursuing Browns near midfield before being pushed out of bounds at Cleveland's 5. From there, Williams carried twice, bowling in from the 1 to put the Ravens ahead 17-3.

For the third straight week, the Ravens were without Lewis, their motivational leader and star linebacker who has been slowed by a nagging toe injury. But the 5-foot-8, 212-pound Rice, who has become one of the NFL's best all-around backs, carried the load and made sure Baltimore didn't miss a beat.

The Ravens hadn't played since Thanksgiving and were out of sync at times. However, they were finally able to beat a weaker opponent following a quality win. Three times this season, they had stubbed their toe on the road following victories but despite two botched field goals, and a fumble that gave the Browns great field position, the Ravens pushed toward the playoffs.

The Browns have major problems.

Quarterback Colt McCoy finished just 17 of 35 for 192 yards and a TD. But he fell to 0-7 in his career against division opponents, and did little to convince Browns management that he should be their QB of the future. He's got four games left this season to make a favorable impression, assuming he's healthy enough to play.

McCoy injured his right knee early, came back after missing one play and took several hard shots in the second half.

After throwing a short pass in the first quarter, McCoy was hit by Ravens defensive end Arthur Jones as he backpedaled. At first, McCoy, whose white No. 12 jersey was smeared with grass stains and dirt, appeared to be seriously injured. He fell back to the turf, was treated by trainers and limped to the sideline. Backup Seneca Wallace came in for one play, but McCoy returned the next time Cleveland got the ball.

The Ravens thoroughly dominated the Browns in the first half, but led only 10-0 at the break after Cundiff missed field-goal attempts of 34 and 41 yards.

Baltimore had the ball for 18:49 and racked up 158 rushing yards on 28 carries in the opening 30 minutes. At halftime, the Ravens had 260 total yards to 93 for Cleveland. Amazingly, it was still a game at the break.

Following Cundiff's second miss to the right, Cleveland had a chance to run out the clock and escape to the locker room trailing just 7-0. But McCoy was intercepted by Jimmy Smith, who returned it to the Browns 15. The Ravens, who inexplicably stopped giving the ball to Rice in the final minutes of the first half, had to settle for Cundiff's 21-yard field goal with 13 seconds left.

Somehow, the Browns managed to hang around and cut it to 10-3 in the third on Phil Dawson's 21-yard field goal.

Flacco was stripped by Browns rookie defensive end Jabaal Sheard and Cleveland recovered. McCoy connected with a wide-open Peyton Hillis for 52 yards to the Baltimore 5. But the Browns couldn't score a TD as tight end Evan Moore let a pass from McCoy sail through his hands in the back of the end zone.

The missed opportunity was magnified moments later when Rice ran wild.

The Ravens rode Rice for their first score, taking a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on his 6-yard run. He darted through the line and found his way to the end zone, capping a 61-yard drive in which he carried seven times for 48.
